Mastodon feels right because I forgot social media was never about following a leader, celebrity, or brand - though it was useful and heartening when those acted like humans. Instead it was about friends, interaction, knowledge, humor, connection. It was about the meshy World Wide Web and being a node on it connected to other nodes. All else is commerce, which can be done respectfully and well (with work), but that’s not why our souls gravitate to this experience.

As much as I enjoyed the waves of trending terms “Gillian Anderson,” “Mulder,” and “Scully” that would roll across :twitter: on a regular basis, it’s now clear there are better ways for lovers of specific things and people to come together w/out noising it up for everyone else; and while fandom and nostalgia are amazing, fulfilling, and valuable, they’re perhaps not the *main* course.

@leo So Fedified verifies you were Twitter verified before one could pay to make that happen, and gives a way to indicate that. Also says it “protects individuals and organizations from impersonation on Mastodon by providing a quick and easy way to verify their real Mastodon account.” Innocuous enough, but the fedified hashtag makes it clear this rubs people the wrong way. There’s rancor about potential stratification, monetization, & centralization.

It’s good to be here this holiday weekend, free from exhortations to over-consume, free from the feeling that this environment is like LinkedIn with cash tips (my initial impression of Post), among thoughtful people with good ideas and valuable insights, and free from woes and cares. It feels like having spent too much on a family vacation to somewhere exclusive, private, and cool, away from crowds and stress - but it’s the opposite of overpriced, it’s not private, and we ARE the hoi polloi.😂

@leo I think of Snow Crash too, am just a little sick of the term at the moment, and I feel like the actual experience of the metaverse should be at least as good/satisfying as is, say, Mastodon before someone like OED dubs it Word of the Year. (Plus, “goblin mode?” C’mon, just imagine all the crusty old linguists glaring disapprovingly over their spectacles…)

Interesting segment on #SecurityNow with Steve Gibson and @leo about freebie bots: bots that scour the Web for mistakenly underpriced items to buy up as many as possible before the mistake is caught. https://youtu.be/HiABizPScto While probably not “illegal” in the criminal sense, business owners could sue users of such scrapers and bots on various grounds (including one of my favorites, #TrespassToChattels). Also, this reminds me a little of #JerryAndMargeGoLarge.

Social media and its misuses have so scarred and scared me that even here, where no one is leveraging my data and there’s a palpable vibe of well-wishing and support, I don’t think I could or should post an actual location or activity. Much as I love seeing others’ real-time experiences, and don’t fear for their safety, I just can’t do it myself. It would go against all the advice I give others when asked. How about you?
