@mcread Sometimes websites don't like Waterfox, so Vivaldi is a good backup browser and installs quickly. Ungoogled Chromium takes a full day to install/compile, not good. Brave is confusing to newbies, promoting all kinds of junk. Vivaldi seems OK so far, it's just a browser. It works well enough that I'm done looking around for alternatives. For non-tech folks, I think it's important to have Chrome compatibility now since Firefox is losing market share, so devs neglect FF compatibility.

@Effortless FWIW @Johncdvorak was briefly mentioned by Jason Roberts on the TechZing podcast. It's a tech startup podcast that never discussed politics before, but Jason went on an epic rant about the current state of politics, why the media is so far out of wack (left vs right) compared to most people in the middle. JCD's name came up, I missed the context, but I figure maybe Jason is listening to No Agenda. TechZing is not huge, but in tech realm they have some influence, esp on Hacker News.

@Cosmic I voted for the code camp bc I was an instructor for a code camp, and dished out tons of useful knowledge. However, older CS folks will do better, because you had to be very smart just to get into a university, you needed a high GPA and high test scores, those people will do well in any job, despite crap curriculum and crap professors using crap languages. But today, perfectly smart white dudes are not getting into universities because of racism/sexism in admissions. Also the cost!

@Cosmic And I bet asian dudes have it worse. In any case, to be a great developer the #1 factor is the ability to focus for a long time. Also, code camps will often keep 'dumb' people with no ability, because they want the money. I told one guy, if you're not understanding these easy concepts, I can tell you right now this won't work out for you as a career. One of my managers found out and she shit a brick. Regardless, the guy wasn't going to grow a new brain to understand the curriculum.

@Cosmic Yes, I just made a generalization that universities can be behind the times, or will use teaching assistants that barely speak English, and pack 300 kids into a classroom to watch a video of the professor, or at least that was a problem in the 90s. I'm sure great universities do exist. Personally, my high school had amazing CS teachers. In retrospect, I didn't really need a bachelors degree, I was doing pro work already before starting college. But back then a diploma meant something.

@spaceopossum If you watch "State of the Word" you get to hear the stats. Apparently the yearly growth of WordPress is larger than Wix/Squarespace combined. I have used Squarespace to embed custom features for clients, and yeah it's cool, but if you're getting many visitors, I doubt Squarespace is charging only $25/month, they got you by the balls then. Also WP has Squarespace-like UI now, natively or through plugins/themes. I would not be surprised if Squarespace is a fork of WordPress.

@spaceopossum Regardless, I'm shutting the doors of my blog hosting business, for various reasons. I might take a WordPress role inside a larger company for the right salary, but I'm closing down my blog hosting business. Maybe I'll switch to some other industry, haven't decided yet.

@spaceopossum I didn't really answer your question. I think because it's open source, it'll survive a long time, and older websites will need legacy support for a long time. WordPress will survive as long as the WWW survives. If the WWW turns to shit, then I think we would revert back to something like Fidonet using Bluetooth networks LOL.I suppose WordPress could peak and be replaced by some Golang thing, but the ecosystem is so large that it might just continue for decades.

@spaceopossum Yeah, well doing everything myself for peanuts versus making 6 figures with benefits, free food, a nice office, free gym membership, I'm tired of being poor and doing sales/support/marketing/accounting myself. If a real estate company hired me and let me run shit and payed a competitive salary, then sure. Solopreneur life would be more tolerable if I was making a crapload of money in a fun niche market, then I could afford to outsource the boring bits to other people hah.

@noagendashowvideo @obihahn Dr Shiva exposed the same thing, including the government documents explaining how it's done, who does it, how influencers are assessed, etc.
