@Cosmic 6 month focused study can gain more experience with you than someone that has been brainwashed at university for 4 years.

@Cosmic Ask about any specific real life projects they worked on where they made a significant impact or other, personal/assigned projects where they learned something difficult and then did something with it. Then you determine from their answer, or lack thereof.

@Cosmic Given the two options, I'd have to interview the candidates to get a feel for them.Neither education level gives me much useful information to go on.

@Cosmic How recent was school? I once worked for a company that would hire someone with an IT degree from 20 years ago over someone with relevant job experience last month. It made no sense.

@gguzman97 You ask both candidates and their answers are just as good. The only tangible difference between the two is that one is CS the other is code camp.

@ThorHammerfist You interview both and they are effectively the same in every way, except one did a code camp and the other CS undergrad

@Cosmic I have them both write a random number generator. I flip a coin to choose which generator will be used to generate the random number that determines which of them I hire.

@Cosmic I voted for the code camp bc I was an instructor for a code camp, and dished out tons of useful knowledge. However, older CS folks will do better, because you had to be very smart just to get into a university, you needed a high GPA and high test scores, those people will do well in any job, despite crap curriculum and crap professors using crap languages. But today, perfectly smart white dudes are not getting into universities because of racism/sexism in admissions. Also the cost!

@Cosmic And I bet asian dudes have it worse. In any case, to be a great developer the #1 factor is the ability to focus for a long time. Also, code camps will often keep 'dumb' people with no ability, because they want the money. I told one guy, if you're not understanding these easy concepts, I can tell you right now this won't work out for you as a career. One of my managers found out and she shit a brick. Regardless, the guy wasn't going to grow a new brain to understand the curriculum.

@ctsystems At least as of when I got my CS degree, it was fucking hard. Probably not as hard as Aerospace Engineering, but it included shit like …Hand convert between basesTruth tablesWriting programs in assembly languageLogical circuit designBuckets of C++Deleting nodes from binary search trees and DAGsAnd I actually studied everything they told me to, and have applied all of the above knowledge in real projects for $$$.

@Cosmic Usually the CS grad. We would develop relationships with nearby schools to bring in students as sophomores or juniors as "student aides" over the summer. Would get to know them and just not offer jobs to the people who didn't work out. Also used them to help screen for the next year as well.

@Cosmic Yes, I just made a generalization that universities can be behind the times, or will use teaching assistants that barely speak English, and pack 300 kids into a classroom to watch a video of the professor, or at least that was a problem in the 90s. I'm sure great universities do exist. Personally, my high school had amazing CS teachers. In retrospect, I didn't really need a bachelors degree, I was doing pro work already before starting college. But back then a diploma meant something.

@ctsystems My program didn’t have any of those specific problems, and wasn’t at an elite university.
