@jefftk @tw @cshabsin yeah, the prone to abuse and "hard to standardize across all implementations" are the reasons it was rejected in 2017, and has languished as an untouched feature request since 2020 (respectively). Time to rethink that. (I don't love that a single implementation is 95% of the fediverse, but it is; standardization is frankly secondary to making sure the core implementation works well.

Now up to 1.7GB, across 4846 requests, from 2302 different instances.Interestingly, this includes servers that my instance has suspended; e.g. poa.st, which I wouldn't have expected to see this post; I guess this is because boosts from a server that isn't defederated with them can make it through. That has some side effects I don't like.Chart attached shows new instances requesting pages from my server per minute since I posted it. List of instances at https://crschmidt.net/fediverse/linkfetcher-instances.txt .

Additional fun things to learn: - Mastodon does not appear to use range headers or limit the size of a download to identify opengraph information, so linking a large file means 1000 servers are gonna read the whole damn thing? - Plemora does a HEAD request first to (I expect) check the content-type: for the .txt link above, Plemora does _not_ fetch the content of the file (Mastodon does)

@PaterSnape @jefftk @tw @cshabsin I don't really know what you mean here?Specifically, what I mean is "95% of the servers making these requests are Mastodon servers, so this is largely a Mastodon problem." My understanding is Mastodon is also the home to the overwhelming majority of the Fediverse _users_ (even though it's only bare majority of _servers_). My wording choice was poor, but I don't have anyone intentionally blocked?

@PaterSnape Okay. Well, that's through no action of mine. However, looking at https://joinfediverse.wiki/FediBlock likely gives the easy explanation here. - NoAgendaSocial is relatively widely blocked, nearly as much as poa.st. (On better.boston, this is "limited".) - Gleasonator is also widely blocked, and is marked "Suspend" on my instance.I have no particular opinions on these particular moderation choices, but they weren't made by me, and certainly not to block people trying to correct me personally.

@PaterSnape (re-adding @jefftk to the thread, since he was interested in the behavior; Jeff, see previous post here. This is based on how Mastodon handles instance blocks -- for Pater, a "limit", so I can search for his posts and reply to them, and would see them if I followed him; for Gleasonator, the instance is Suspend, so I can't find them even if I search explicitly.)

Two years ago today, I bought my first #ebike. Since then, I have bought a second one for myself (and currently I technically own 6, though that will go down to 4 in the next couple months). In the past two years, I have ridden approximately 3100 miles on these bikes; I have also driven the sale of at least 200 more #ebikes through referrals and recommendations, with many more thousands of miles between them.#BikeTooter

Assuming 1000 miles of lifetime replacement per ebike referral I have made directly, my impact here is likely approximately 200 tons of CO2 emission reduction over the bike lifetime.

@mjg59 Given the way these decisions are being made, it is almost certain that security was not consulted on these decisions. Broadly speaking, these efforts aren't broad-reaching company efforts to balance cost-cutting versus other needs; they're top-down mandates coming from the people who have access to the books towards the people who make the money for the company.(Not that you'd be surprised by any of this.)

Google today announced that the board has approved $70B of stock buybacks.Stock buybacks are not considered a universal good: "Some economists and investors argue that using excess cash to buy up stocks in the open market is the opposite of what companies should be doing, which is reinvesting to facilitate growth (as well as job creation and capacity)."At Google that might mean things like (for example) "Choosing not to fire 12,000 employees."

I might have accidentally bought another e-bike. Bird is putting their bikes on a clearance sale at Ocean State Job Lot—former MSRP of $2200, currently for sale at $1000 with a $500 gift card to go along with it.https://www.oceanstatejoblot.com/birdbike-v-frame-ebike-glacier-white/product/289210https://www.oceanstatejoblot.com/birdbike-v-frame-ebike-glacier-white/product/289210

@mjg59 bleh. What a horrible human being. But I feel like making the connection of “this advertising platform allows hateful bigotry, maybe we shouldn’t advertise there” is a pretty failed pitch to the company that runs (and presumably uses) Google Adwords.

@phantomkitty @clive Using bike traffic counts from a long-standing bike counter in Boulder, Colorado (https://open-data.bouldercolorado.gov/datasets/bf644e6159854777a7b0862f69ae82bf_0/explore) shows:Bicycling highest in Aug->Oct (likely college related)March-July and November are pretty steady at around 60% of peak fall usageOnly Dec/Jan/Feb have low ridership, at about 30% of peak fall usage.Even in the worst months, half of the annual average trips still happen, and overall, the cycling season is about 9 months.

@phantomkitty @clive A quick chart of the total monthly counts at the Boulder bike counter to help visualize the overall impact; the annual average of the monthly counts is right at 100k, so you can see that March -> May are really not far off, and November is actually above the average.

The very extreme price swings in unusual grid events can unfortunately drive a major impact to ratepayers; these events can be mitigated with collective efforts to reduce usage during periods of unusual supply/demand mismatch (e.g. EV chargers that automatically turn off), an approach I think is typically referred to as "Demand Response". As we further electrify, demand response systems seem like they'll be even more crucial. (h/t @solar_chase for the link.)https://mastodon.green/@solar_chase/112371378728967228

@Wolven search has never been guaranteed to give you simple true facts about consensus reality, back to yahoo and altavista days. I think The idea that search engines do not work and should not be used as a result is unreasonable.

@crumbleneedy @Wolven The standard set was "guaranteed to give you simple true facts about consensus reality". Google search has always had the ability to return bad results; and those results have appeared normative at least as long as Featured Snippets have been around (so at least a decade). Bing implemented features to display StackOverflow snippets directly in the search result (and sometimes picked the wrong answer). There are no guarantees that search is returning the correct thing.

@crumbleneedy @Wolven For example, the answer to "How many rocks should you eat per day" has had a Featured Snippet telling you to eat 3 servings of rocks per day for years. That isn't new, and it isn't AI (even if people see it surfaced through AI). But the fact that search can give you bad results doesn't mean that using search is worse, overall, than not using search.
