"Why won't those mean Linux people let ZFS into the kernel" I dunno maybe it's because Sun released it under a GPL-incompatible license and Oracle could just fix that whenever they wanted by upgrading the license but hasn't?

@mjg59 luckily OpenZFS isn’t that hard to install these days, especially on Debian. Root-on-ZFS is a bit more hassle without ZFS on the installation medium but usually it’s for the large storage arrays anyway.

@mjg59 I've heard the rumor that the CDDL was specifically crafted/picked to disallow mainlining of ZFS into Linux. I have no actual hard data on that, though.

@mjg59 It's a subtly evil licence too - on the face of it, who could object to a "you can't sue us for IP violations" clause, especially among people who are inherently suspicious of the whole concept of IP? Then you realise that that clause would apply even if Oracle were currently suing you…

@dch @mjg59 Changing the license for the kernel would require an agreement between all copyright owners. That is, from anyone who’s gotten any contribution merged thus far. It’s near impossible.

@ttyS1 That's cool, but unfortunately various other people need to care about copyright law so it's not going upstream in its current form

@mjg59 Is it possible that Oracle can't change it because they inherited bits of the code from other places?(And do dead kernel developers rise up as time_t wraps??)

@mjg59 I can't believe anyone would "both sides" a situation with Oracle involved.

@penguin42 @mjg59 I believe Oracle own all the ZFS stuff that they bought with Sun, and that's all under the CDDL. OpenZFS is a different kettle of fish, with most under the CDDL and IIrC there's some GPL in there. Oracle could trivially relicence ZFS as GPL, but they won't, and TBH I'm not sure enough people would care if they did. Most of the development work has been done on non-Oracle forks.

@mjg59 I mean, it's not like Oracle has ever pursued aggressive license enforcement related to licensing of a widely used product befo... *touches finger to ear*Oh.

@mjg59 ZFS doesn't seem to be a great fit for Linux anyway, in my limited experience as an admin. I mean, ZFS has its own cache in addition to the Linux page cache. I'm using ZFS on Linux for a server that I manage, but am watching bcachefs with interest.

@penguin42 they can't relicense work they don't own, but they can release a new version of the CDDL and the default is for CDDLed work to pick up the new version automatically
