@vees @arclight Yep. I hope they never drop the SE line, it's the only one I actually like.

@Wolven The lie that tech folks really love to perpetuate is that it isn’t possible to regulate a system if you don’t understand how it works. When all that’s actually necessary is understanding what it does, and that’s generally pretty simple.

I sometimes think about how unfortunate it is that certain scientific thought leaks into mainstream consciousness. With our affinity towards binary thinking and in-group / out-group behavior, we really like to take some scientific generalization and start drawing lines in the sand around it. When it was only ever meant to simplify certain types of discussion among experts who understand statistics.

Sometimes I like to flip things in discussions to cast the popular in-group as the out-group and boy do people get bent out of shape, when all I’m really doing is drawing attention to some invalid assumptions.

For the record, this is why I tend to really shy away from terms like “neurodivergent.” The language suggests there’s a norm that’s being diverged from, and that goes nowhere good.

@futurebird here is where I shill for eye protection as well. While biking I had a car kick a pebble directly into my eye. Which is pretty rough when you’re cranking at 20mph in traffic and suddenly can’t see. Helmets are nice too. I saw a kid just this morning going full out down a bike lane in a school zone with no helmet on.

@futurebird @adriano It’s a TCP-based server using a pretty straightforward plaintext protocol. There’s a command line (or a response line) and then a message that looks a whole lot like an email message. So a client connects, sends a request, and (always) gets a response. You can use telnet to send client commands if you want to play with it at the protocol level. This is for HTTP/1.x anyway. HTTP/2.x is a new and much more complicated binary protocol. Not a fan of HTTP/2, for nuanced reasons.

@futurebird @tersenurse I think the problem is those folks aren’t driven by logic or rationality. It’s impossible to reason through their thinking because their thinking isn’t reasonable. Which is also, unfortunately, why it’s nearly impossible to get through to them, even if you’re family.

@Wolven Also, this discounts the fact that people have established workflows with apps that may not exist on other platforms.

@futurebird McKenna's ideas all sounds to me like he did way too many psychedelics and just kind of wants to be a cult leader.

@futurebird I used to use just a kettle on the stove but electric kettles are _so_ fast now. Though I’ll forever wish I had a hot water dispenser.

@futurebird I'm kinda curious, for the "no" responses, how many of those folks are in a private school system. Because I had thought this was required for all public schools now. And yeah they're awful. Schools in CA are basically all a collection of disconnected single story buildings with an open campus and windows everywhere. It's literally impossible to get kids out of sight from the outside.

@futurebird @baarda I like that moment where the picture morphs into a different picture. She goes from pouring milk onto the table to pouring it into the woven basket, her hand reforms into a vaguely hand-shaped thing somehow embedded in the now silver jug…

@futurebird Yep, that's why I've never understood why anyone listens to a word the man says. It's all meaningless to him.

@futurebird Yep I’m of a similar age and I’ve worked precisely one place that to my knowledge ever had a pension and it was swapped to a 401k for new employees a few years before I started. There have always been older folks telling me to put as much as possible into those funds, but that’s hard when you’re barely scraping by. And then the 2008 recession happened and a lot of folks got whatever savings they had wiped out.

@futurebird I suppose I should have tried at the time (the company is gone now). Ironically, that pension was destroyed in 2008 because it was at AEG. Even the people who were legitimately enrolled lost everything.
