I sometimes think about how unfortunate it is that certain scientific thought leaks into mainstream consciousness. With our affinity towards binary thinking and in-group / out-group behavior, we really like to take some scientific generalization and start drawing lines in the sand around it. When it was only ever meant to simplify certain types of discussion among experts who understand statistics.

Sometimes I like to flip things in discussions to cast the popular in-group as the out-group and boy do people get bent out of shape, when all I’m really doing is drawing attention to some invalid assumptions.

For the record, this is why I tend to really shy away from terms like “neurodivergent.” The language suggests there’s a norm that’s being diverged from, and that goes nowhere good.
