The Wall Street journal has an article where they were dismayed (?) with how poor Walz is. But, then they mention the potential value of his defined benefits pension plan as something that might tip the scales. As either a very young gen-Xer or a "geriatric millennial" I had to go through a lot to get my pension secured. And through it all I was horrified that nearly everyone younger than me has no equivalent option. I hope this becomes a bigger issue.

@revndm Pensions are amazing and we should talk about them a lot since they are a thing we CAN do. I'd like to see someone ask JD Vance if we should perhaps use pensions to make those magical grandmas who take care of your kids exist more often.(and lower the retirement age)

@futurebird It'll be interesting. I get a vague feeling that businesses are rediscovering the value of accumulated experience in employees after trying to obliterate it with minimum wage all these years. Stupid businesses...

@futurebird Yep I’m of a similar age and I’ve worked precisely one place that to my knowledge ever had a pension and it was swapped to a 401k for new employees a few years before I started. There have always been older folks telling me to put as much as possible into those funds, but that’s hard when you’re barely scraping by. And then the 2008 recession happened and a lot of folks got whatever savings they had wiped out.

@complexmath Go over the fine print or if you have a union rep ask to meet with them and ask if there is anything you missed. It turned out that though I worked at a few places they were all in the same plan and so I was able to push my start year back just before they ruined everything. It was a hassle and basically all I did this summer but it was worth it.

@futurebird I suppose I should have tried at the time (the company is gone now). Ironically, that pension was destroyed in 2008 because it was at AEG. Even the people who were legitimately enrolled lost everything.
