So #Firefox sync cannot work unless you have a phone number. #Mozilla what are you doing?Why do you join the Facebook, Telegram, Signal crowd, which authenticate me, as a person, using a stupid telco number? I can understand it to be an option for recovery, but being mandatory is, #privacy wise, unacceptable.

I checked more thoroughly. When you click "add a device" it asks you for the phone number, and it seems a dead end, if you don't have (or want to share) a phone number.But if you just go to one other device, and login to Firefox account, it works.It still sucks, because you need to know there is another option. The UI just blindly assumes that my other device is a phone with a number, and that it doesn't have Firefox installed.

It's a real pity that #duolingo didn't go the no-profit, free-software way. They seem decently serious in wanting to provide free education, but I'd never waste money or contribution time in a for-profit operation that could disappear in a puff by being bought or going bankrupt.Happy to see an alternative coming!

@ademalsasa XMPP, with Dino & Conversations.Because it works™, it is secure (with OMEMO), resource conservative and has a very diverse ecosystem, unlike Element, which brought nothing beside the "shiny new toy" effect.Telegram as a second choice for less-techy people, because unlike Signal, it doesn't spam my phone number to any single contact I have including people in groups; also I perceive its founder as slightly less asshole than Signal's, and I would use neither for sensitive stuff.

@JoshStrobl @gamingonlinux @sks316 If there are two users on mastodon, and one is a "googler" and one is a "non-googler", there are non-googlers on mastodon, and then you are advertising to non-googlers.If you have a Google News button/link/whatever somewhere in your site for convenience, among other option, it's not really advertising. A dedicated post on the other hand is.Again this is not about mastodon, it's about advertising Google, which is bad (I'm not interested to argue on that).
