@blacklight I don't think this is even an issue. This is the way companies or other big orgs can put in the features they want or need. Presumably while their company or org pays them to do this directly or implicitly to 'figure out solutions to their problems'.I don't think another text editor has any merit period, but if something like this is to be done, this is not a bad way to do it.I really don't see any unconnected person to engage with this because they love working for free.

@rolle unironically, this is a neat precedent for "#opensource".Obviously there will be people opening issues while not acting in good faith. Also obviously, it's relatively unrealistic to expect twitter to be able to moderate this mess. The same is probably true for any other project, should it suddenly receive a huge amount of attention.

@hn50 Hmmm... This could be interesting for personal archiving.😄 How about training your own LLM on a comment history, and taking talking to your self to a next level?Could be fun.

@stevenroose last time I had to make one LaTeX, the text formatting tool not the material, had what I needed.I would prefer a working solution in html though. I found something from Mozilla that didn't work...

@kfogel No, it really really really isn't.In engineering you have two choices: doing lots of preparation and being certain that something works and and doing a lot less preparation, being less certain and trying it.It has nothing todo with safety, since you can always create an environment to safely test in, and it has nothing to do with externalization, since you can always make sure that the environment you're testing in is safe, even if the thing you're testing isn't.

#linux general software stuff. Some explain mail administration programs like thunderbird to me.I'm giving this program authorization to mess with my email? And to store credentials safely? Why? Wtf?I just clicked on a "contact" link and it spawned a bunch of repulsive windows that asked me to set things up and sign in and everything. Why am i supposed to trust my machine / OS to do these things again? Same for user/profile administration and integration. Does anyone actually use those?

@xaetacore Ok, the network connectivity thing makes a lot of sense. Still, the credentials storing seems like a bad idea. I have no definite source for that, I somehow trust the browser https, username /pw process more than anything that does something automatically locally.Regarding user profiles, I don't mean merely setting up username and password, you can do pretty involved things. Setting real name and address, profile picture, social links and a bunch of other.

@xaetacore Pretty sure at least my PC / browser don't.I'm not logging in automatically, I refuse to use things automatic logins with browsers and things like "keyring" for the same reason. They sure shove it into my face that they want to, just like Big Evil^tm and that's why I don't like and trust it.@Zergling_man Same vein as the "we can fix this". Can you? How do you convince me that using those things is safe and a good idea? Generally, not putting this on you personally or now.

@Zergling_man @xaetacore My "threat model" is that I trust none of it would prefer an air gapped password manager and manually typing things in.I'm not "realistically" under threat by anyone in particular."I only need to convince you that web browsers suck more than them. I have already achieved this objective."No you have not, I just already trust them as much as I have to. I think that adding more software just adds more potential sources of failure and problems.

@futurebird the toned down, but friendly and a bit playful colors are like sun bleached toys. The run down, lack of maintenance is a bit cyberpunk-y but I can't think of a good name for the combination.

@Nonilex There is an anime movie called "Redline" that's about a car race. Kinda scifi ish.
