@foone I have a moaan inkpalm on order which is basically a cheap version of the boox palma... so, not really the same thing in that it's just a kind of slow shitty android device, lol. The light phone seems pretty close, though! https://www.thelightphone.com/

@futurebird I suspect part of this is that the way AI music seems to be used is intentionally discouraging anyone from giving enough of their attention to it to evaluate it on artistic merits. Here's a post https://www.honest-broker.com/p/the-ugly-truth-about-spotify-is-finally about Spotify filling up their playlists with it-- the goal isn't really for you to "like" it, the goal is for you to be so used to "music" as inoffensive ambient noise that you simply allow it to keep playing without wondering what it is or who made it. Whereas visual art you have to spend at least a moment with it in front of your eyes, occupying your attention.

@futurebird oh hey, I did do this! (Take a math class for some reason as an adult and end up quitting my job and going back to school because of it.) Voted for the history course because I think it would have been the most accessible/interesting to me at that point... in theory I'd vote for the euler's formula one but my actual class I took was a high school algebra equivalency and I would not have had the tools to appreciate anything beautiful or interesting about that or the normal distribution without filling in the basic gaps in my understanding that that gave me.

@futurebird @PetraOleum YEAH I have so many friends who had to do a first year stats class in college and felt so frightened and alienated by it, and the common thread is almost always not having taken calculus. Which makes sense in terms of prerequisites, there are lots of areas where you need to understand basic stats but don't actually want to weed out any student who can't pass calculus! But imagining learning about distributions without understanding basic calculus is like... well yeah this is wacky. this whole subject is completely out to lunch why would you do any of this

@futurebird I didn’t and wished I did but not really in a concrete way, it was just a thing characters in books did so it seemed cool.

@futurebird As someone who has had basically no contact with US Evangelicals and only heard about them as a negative cultural force, I really liked reading this article https://www.middleeasteye.net/news/god-loves-gaza-us-christians-gather-rare-display-solidarity-palestinians about an Evangelical pro-Palestine conference. Of course it should be obvious that any extremely broad religious umbrella is going to have a wide diversity of opinions about all sorts of things! But somehow the range of people in this article proudly and happily identifying themselves as "evangelicals" was surprising to me. (And I'm guessing to the author too, since they keep using the phrase "who identifies as an Evangelical," as if there might be some criterion for the word that they're not meeting other than self-identification...)

@futurebird She can get a local SIM at a phone shop, and they can put it in the phone for her and swap it back when she’s about to leave! (I mean, I don’t think this is *officially* a service the stores advertise, but it’s such a trivial operation I can’t imagine any tech store kid refusing it to an older customer.)

@futurebird I doubt you’d even need to make a up a new faith wholesale— you could make arguments for ads being implicated in idolatry, or maybe even usury, depending on your mood, and pull textual support at least from any of the Abrahamic religions…

@futurebird I think for me it’s that when the robotics team gives a human pronoun to their robot, they’re doing it because the object is representative of the time and care and attention they put into it. Same if someone does it to their computer or their car— the pronoun is cute and in some sense appropriate because it states that you have an important relationship to that object, you spend a lot of time with it so your own humanity rubs off on your perception of it. In the case of an LLM, the process of building a relationship to the object through repeated use or understanding of its function is hijacked by the object itself trying to assert its selfhood, and the user just accepting it.

@futurebird I use freetube, which lets you easily subscribe to and watch youtube without a google account, no ads and you can turn off all suggested videos. So I can keep track of stuff I want to follow there, but don’t get sucked into watching other stuff by accident. (You can also subscribe to youtube channels via RSS for this, but then you still have to watch on the site and see “suggestions”)
