It's a pity that the technology never aligned such that we could get an e-ink pda

@foone what if we made out on the e-ink display publicly?

@foone what about using a, for example, 2004-ish HP iPaq with a non-responsive or displaying screen and then replace the screen with a same-sized epaper display

@foone Honestly that would've been the move back then.Low power consumption, MUCH better contrast, Actually visible in sunlight, about the same resolution, and the framerate on even the last couple generations could easily be done on eink. And they didn't usually have password locks, so just drawing the messages to the screen as they arrived would've been so good for being able to peek at it without needing to actually do anything.Honestly eink displays would be amazing for dumb phones. But even today's "dumb phones" are running a slim android backend with full navigation support and everything.

@foone I have a moaan inkpalm on order which is basically a cheap version of the boox palma... so, not really the same thing in that it's just a kind of slow shitty android device, lol. The light phone seems pretty close, though! https://www.thelightphone.com/

@foone see I like that but what would really tickle my fancy is something like the thinkpad 701c but with an epaper display and a foldout keyboardI have no idea why, I just think that'd be neat

@foone semi-related: after discovering the NeXT machines now in infinitemac.org, I thought: surely Newton is next. Once someone else talented emulates it in the browser, the e-ink part should be a doodle

@foone did you ever see the YotaPhone? It was a normal Android mobile on one side, but if you flipped it over the screen would mirror onto a very fast e-ink display.

@foone there are currently at least 2 on the market. The one from Boox may be the closest to what you’re thinking. The others are just android phones
