@rob I sent my kid to high school with a linux laptop Initally a tiny underpowered emachines 'netbook', later a 2nd hand asus with pretty decent specs. They are now near university graduation, still running linux (on a newer 2nd hand thinkpad). My partner also is using linux after taking advice from a 3rd party to "run what your tech support person runs" :)

@rob aforementioned kid just arrived home, and i mentioned the idea that such a laptop would be banned from the network as a matter of policy. They just shook their head and said "Ridiculous!"

@lightweight Tubby Hansen for mayor ;) A stalwart of local democracy for 55 years (though never elected to anything...)https://thespinoff.co.nz/politics/05-10-2022/an-interview-with-tubby-hansen-whos-run-in-every-christchurch-election-since-1969https://thespinoff.co.nz/local-elections/25-09-2019/tubby-hansens-voting-booklet-blurbs-are-precious-works-of-art

@strypey I very much agree! Much cheaper to install when a house is built, with correct wiring, meter, and safe roof access already part of the job. Of course building houses with less energy use to start with would help a lot too.About 1.2kW (4 panels) per house would be a good baseline IMO. Use microinverters so more can be added incrementally (I did this). It covers the house base load through the day (when power is expensive). In summer also powers heatpump on low.

@lightweight e.g. OpenStreetMap is migrating away from Mailman lists (https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo) to Discourse (https://community.openstreetmap.org/)AFAIK Discourse support "Mailing List Mode", though most people don't use it that way.

@lightweight afaik it is not a blanket policy. At some point the Discourse was set up, and over time more discussion happens there. So especially in areas with already low volume of discussion, having two different channels can split already small participation. (e.g. talk-nz mail vs Oceania section in the forum)Here's some background infohttps://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Mailing_lists

The grapefruit tree overestimated its own strength when it set all this fruit. 😩 In hindsight I should have removed half the fruit. This is about half of the tree.#garden

@RedRobyn it is about half the tree. What's left is the one major side branch.
