So, something that's become clear to me is that we still have a real need for self-managing community email lists like we used to have. Many people still use Google Groups, which are horrible. The old Ezmlm and Mailman lists I used to run are now creaky and hard to maintain... I've done a bit of a look around - I implemented Listmonk, but it's not what I'm after - it's broadcast/marketing, not any subscriber to all subscribers. So I've come back to Mailman, now on v3. Integrates with Mailcow.

@lightweight I've been thinking more and more that I need to build a home lab and start self-hosting, for a bunch of reasons and services. Perhaps I'll join you.

@wxhbxh it's quite empowering, I must say. It feels like a bit of a super power you can just decide to develop if you have a net connected computer, a few $, and a few hours (literally).

@lightweight e.g. OpenStreetMap is migrating away from Mailman lists (https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo) to Discourse (https://community.openstreetmap.org/)AFAIK Discourse support "Mailing List Mode", though most people don't use it that way.

@lightweight I will say Groups.io is really good for not selfhosted mailing lists. It's the original creator of Yahoo! Groups doing it as a separate standalone company. No wild and exciting growth mandate, and a generous free tier.

@bigblen interesting - yes, I've looked at that, too (as you know, we've got a Discourse we could use)... but I haven't heard of many using it that way either. Will be interesting in reading the OSM community's thinking...

@bigblen did they announce their transition somewhere? Interested to hear the reasoning.

@lightweight afaik it is not a blanket policy. At some point the Discourse was set up, and over time more discussion happens there. So especially in areas with already low volume of discussion, having two different channels can split already small participation. (e.g. talk-nz mail vs Oceania section in the forum)Here's some background infohttps://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Mailing_lists

@lightweight @wxhbxh I hosted some Mailman 3 lists a few years agoThe modern email conventions make lists hard, as the from address must match the encrypted keys (I forget the exact details)Rewriting from addresses works, but is close to illegal, very bad formSpam filters will often block messages from lists. It is a bit of a nightmare, and needs rethinking. Mailman, at three years ago, does not rethink it.
