"50 states, 50 protests, in one day"That trailing "1" says everything. The point is so dangerously being missed. What if we did simultaneous street parties? Then went back to business as usual. That's not a movement. It's a distributed flashmob. There are elders alive today who know what building movements involved. We ignore that hard-won wisdom at our collective peril. At some point our broader culture will learn that we can't field of dreams this shit. How many will die before then...

"This is all fine and good....I mean, white folks jumping on board an idea that Black folks had is not new. But here’s the thing, and I’ve said this before, but it needs to be underlined, highlighted and put in bold: The boycott cannot just be one day. Not if anyone wants it to work."https://www.theroot.com/the-feb-28-economic-boycott-is-not-the-move-heres-wh-1851766644

@lillyfinch One week boycotts, of one store at a time, each scheduled with a one week break for normal shopping?Sorry, no, but if one can stock up in advance knowing full well that one can make another run to the same store a week later, or else do the same shopping at a store one stayed away from two weeks prior, that's not gonna make an impact, and the retailers know it.It's a bunch of day planner management, nothing more. Penciling a series of boycott into one's calendar is more of the same pattern of RSVP protest by appointment.Meanwhile, in the Republic of Georgia, they've been protesting now for over ninety consecutive days. From the Root:"Not only were the participants of that boycott able to get people to change their patterns and embrace discomfort to cause change, but they were also able to get protesters who walk miles daily to accomplish their goal. That’s significant. That dedication and tenacity is what made the city of Montgomery bend to their will."

That’s significant. That dedication and tenacity is what made the city of Montgomery bend to their will. The same kind of dedication will be needed if the people behind this week’s protest want to be successful…but I have doubts."https://www.theroot.com/the-feb-28-economic-boycott-is-not-the-move-heres-wh-1851766644

Can we PLEASE stop telling people to mask at protests for "privacy".First, it's fallacious. Identification by the eyes and the top half of the face is and always has been far more effective than identification by the mouth and the bottom half of the face.Second, it feeds the very fear of masks that legitimize surveillance state attempts to ban them. The rhetoric is being used to justify making public health measures illegal.Seeing "Make a statement against fascist mask bans" and "Privacy" in the same list as reasons to mask during protest is infuriating. The latter list item wholly undermines the former. If you want to make a statement against fascist mask bans, don't make statements of misinformation that can be, will be, and are actively used to push fascist mask ban legislation.Repeating the lies the fascists rely upon only serves to re-inscribe those lies as supposed truth.Don't do the fascists' propaganda for them.

The arc of history does not bend.It flexes as a matter of the continuity of force applied to it.

@RogerBW @futurebird And yet that may just replace machine-encoded biases with human-habit biases:https://hcommons.social/@beadsland/114829262094497808To be clear, in Usia, building numbers appear at the beginning of the line, where unit numbers appear at the end. In Germany, building number appears at the end of the line.So now you, as a German shipper, prepare a routing label for a Usian address that ends with a unit number. You're given a freeform multi-line text field, but the courier wants specific fields. What ends up in the building number field depends on how cognizant you are of the difference between German and Usian addressing practices.

My fellow Usian leftists, including folk myself would typically look to for challenging and thought-provoking takes, really are salivating over Mamdani.Like this mayoral nominee in a conservative town, that many Usians don't even recognize as culturally of the same country, is the chosen one of some scifi fantasy novel who validates every opinion and position the left has ever held.Kayfabe panto really is a powerful drug.[But then, it's the first estate, so one might as well say opiate.]

@liaizon They're talking about the entire technology infrastructure, not just backend storage:https://mastodon.world/@Mer__edith/115445707420096286"the entire stack, practically speaking, is owned by 3-4 players"How many users of fedi are not dependent on Apple, Google or Microsoft to read and post on a fedi client?AWS, per this argument, is a symptom of a much broader problem, that one doesn't escape by crowing about individual instances doing as they choose, because to access those instances, one still has to go through access providers. Now, one can argue that they're conflating AWS (backend) with device/OS (frontend) providers in a disingenuous manner. And there is some validity in that counter-argument.But that's why they're lumping Mastodon in there with everyone else. Because in the end, if you're using one of three device architectures as your access point, you're still dealing with hyperscaled (industrial monopoly) providers for that access.
