@popolon Someone mentioned the part num on youtube:"indroraFor those interested:The chip is a GOWIN GW2ARLV18EQ144PC/7 20kLUT 144pin QFP package Aora SRAM based FPGA. It's a pretty nice little FPGA and with the right fingerpokening you could get it to do some Cool Stuff. The price per chip is around $10/ea so I'm guessing these boards are going to retail for ~50-60USD."https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NHHCYpsuCyg&lc=Ugww2Y2LEbrj4OARaP14AaABAg

Been reverse engineering (keyboard, rtc, etc) the #MegaDuck #SuperQuiQue laptop. It's like #GameBoy #Workboy except it actually shipped. It has same GB compatible cpu (sm83) and with slightly altered registers as the Megaduck Handheld.Anyhow, turns out the System ROM has a Y2K12 bug. The, max year supported is 2011.😄(device photo credit ashens on youtube iirc)#gbdev #y2k

Also the min year is 1992, presumably the earliest rounded-down leap year to when development started, due to some look up tables it uses for handling Day of Week calculation and so on.The power-on reset for the year is 1994.

@changelog It's bad enough that it's becoming hard to buy software you get to keep as opposed to living on someone's recurring revenue treadmill. Please do not extend that extractive model to compute hardware, along with the invasive restrictions, constraints and suppression of secondary markets that are often "required" in order to enforce a rental business. That subscription based hardware biz will end up environmental & sustainability aligned seems unlikely.And...https://www.ifixit.com/News/94386/the-truth-about-apples-free-iphone-recycling-program-the-earth-deserves-better

@asie A few anecdotal samples:- 2021 65w usb c charger - barely perceptible whine, lower freq, audible up to a few inches away- 2018 65w barrel charger - moderate whine, audible up to about a 12 inches- 2016(?) 150w barrel charger (for a WD15 dock.. ) - no sound that i can hear, this is the daily driver

In the breakdown by version people are mostly using current releases (as in other gb jams) for #GBstudio, #GBDK and #ZGB when making games. Though a few people use (much) older versions.

Lastly, here are the trends for toolchains in #gbcompo over time. As mentioned, mostly steady showing continued participation from all parts of the #Gameboy development community. There's much more of a shift visible in music drivers.#gbcompo21 #gbcompo23 #gbcompo25

If you're wondering... What is #gbcompo25?- It's a 3 month game jam hosted by many in the #GameBoy homebrew community for games that run on gb hardware. It completed a few days ago. There are tons of great entries to play, go check em out! & congrats to all participants!https://itch.io/jam/gbcompo25/entries

For music drivers in #gbcompo25, #hugedriver is heavily preferred now but about ~12% of people still use #gbtplayer. The only other music driver showing this time is #GBMod.For SFX drivers #VGM2GBSFX has almost the entire share.

@asie Also, I don't think you should be placing responsibility for this on yourself and carrying the weight of that. There are many moving parts and people involved.

@Jeltron @asie Thanks, that's helpful. I hear what you're saying and how it might come across. For the compo this may be partly due to how people have different framing based on background, goals for participation, what they read or hear about it, etc.One of the main reasons why gbcompo is run at all is to encourage making of games that will remain freely available for the community. It is not the only reason, but is a core tenet which is neither incidental nor peripheral. (cont...)

@Jeltron @asie (cont..) I'm not sure gbcompo would have it's current volunteer organizers without it. Judges perhaps, but maybe not organizers. However we also don't want people to participate if it's something they aren't comfortable doing. To that end we'll work on bringing the collective purpose more front and center.

@Jeltron @asie Taking a broader view, it may be helpful to keep in mind that gbcompo is a hobbyist event rooted in a hobbyist culture. A few people have started to make some income off GB indie development, but that is a recent phenomena within a subculture and community that has been around much longer and for the most part existed as a non-commercial undertaking with some notions of commons and mutual sharing.

@Jeltron @asie I don't think that kind of collectivist aspect is singular to hobbies or pastimes of the well off. Anecdotally, from personal experience in various subcultures (that are mainly not tech affluence adjacent) I have seen plenty of cases where there are norms of sharing the fruits of work (and often the work itself divided in various ways). It wouldn't be surprising if sharing oriented mindsets were more common when there was less financial priviledge.

@Jeltron @asie As for open source and copyright: almost every license used to further the (very diverse) goals of open source are entirely built-on and depend on copyright existing. In particular, the GPL (forcing code to remain in the quasi-commons) wouldn't exist and work without copyright as it's enforcement mechanism. However it probably is fair to say many people in open source favor for more equitable copyright terms than the lifetime+ duration it has been extended to in many countries.

@asie It seems like an interesting option to keep in mind, though if I am understand their licensing requirements correctly then disassemblies (which I have a few of) probably wouldn't be permissible on the platform?
