Don't you hate it when you get the urge to mess with something, but there's nothing that needs messed with? So then you know you'll do something unwise?

@person I think that's the whole internet, really. And Fedi is Pure Internet if I ever saw it.

@urusan This relates notably to self-hosting. Avoiding all cloud services is like trying to be a personal island.

I'm doing a little (soft) science: Let's see if I really do get more engagement on Fosstodon than elsewhere, or if that's just my feeling. It could easily be that what really gets engagement, is saying something actually interesting.(And no, this is not about follower counts, collecting updoots, etc. It's about feeling like I'm not just shouting into the void.)

Sometimes I regret buying this Chromebook, even though it's really nice to use. The Google lock-in is strong with it for sure. So much so that it discourages me from deGoogling my other devices much.

@brandon Well, as long as you run ChromeOS, you're stuck with Chrome. And the OS has integrations with other Google products such as Drive. And the Play Store is present, with Android integration.Basically, if you don't want to use Google stuff, you might as well turn this computer off.

@brandon I bought it when I was in a more favorable mood towards Google. But with me, opinions are often fluid. Sometimes I'm happy with this computer, and sometimes I'm in doubt.

@brandon Or, I could try to resell it. It's an Acer Spin 713 and I'd expect it to be decently in demand.

I'm upgrading some HP servers running RHEL 7. On three of them, I hit Esc to hide the Plymouth boot animation, and the consoles went crazy, continually refreshing forever. This effectively locked up the servers, and I actually had to power-cycle them to get them back up. I never saw that happen before.

I started Becky Chambers' new book today. The first SF read in quite some time for me.It occurs to me that @Azure would probably like Becky Chambers.

What's the right word for "people who hang out on Fosstodon"? I was going to say Fosstodoners, but that looks like Fossto-"doner"s, which implies that meat on a spit that's used to make kebabs and gyros.

@LinuxLounge There surely is. Linux is almost mainstream these days, but BSD remains obscure.

I bet a lot of people here use Aegis for 2FA. How are you dealing with the pain of trying to enter the codes on the same device they are generated on? Some apps are stupid and lose the code input field when you switch to Aegis to get the code and come back.

If I want a remote web-based RSS reader and I don't want to host it myself, are there better options than The Old Reader?

I did end up going with hosted miniflux. Cheap and simple. I do have a hard time predicting when it will update my feeds. But The Old Reader is worse about it, updating some feeds more often than others, and then suddenly pulling a bunch of stale content a week later.

#pinephone owners, what OS and DE do you run? I'm turned off by the idea of using either Manjaro or Plasma Mobile.
