@ai6yr That's a happy story, didn't know that was possible. I don't think that would work with ants. @futurebird myrme, what do you think?

@futurebird @ai6yr I wonder how army ants or bees signal that intention.

@futurebird @ai6yr "Ants can tell by the hydrocarbons on their exoskeletons"So you're saying they do it via farts.

@ZachWeinersmith The style should be patter, not opera, save for the solo songs.

@nixCraft Perl. It is impossible to write a non-trivial perl script without it turning into a contestant for obfuscated code of the year.

@wjmaggos Um, you are proposing silent blocking and defederation without giving the offending party any warning or opportunity to address the problematic behavior.

@futurebird @jalefkowit She suggested another one in a dominance move. If later circumstances say it's contraindicated, her campaign can pose impossible conditions to spin it out past the election.

@briankrebs Microsoft is the power purchaser, not the plant operator. But I'll ask what I always do--What's the plan for the spent nuclear fuel? Is it just going to sit on-site for decades in cooling tanks, until 20+ years from now the contract is up and the operator abandons the site, leaving the spent fuel as a problem for PA's ratepayers and taxpayers?

@collectifission @briankrebs ...blocked by politicians whose constituents don't want a fucking nuclear waste dump in their vicinity. That's called politicians doing their jobs. That's a fact of radiological chemistry problem, not a political problem. Not to mention the innate toxicity of plutonium and uranium. No amount of handwavy "blame the politicians" is going to change that.So when someone proposes operating a nuclear power plant for 20 years, it is very reasonable to demand real answers to what will be done with the spent fuel, and be very alert to any path that lets them store the spent fuel on site for 20 years then walk away from the problem.

@collectifission @briankrebs One can demand real answers on the question of creating new nuclear waste, especially when you know the default answer is "oh, we'll just store it onsite at first, then every few years kick the can down the road and then walk away in 20 years."

@futurebird In an ideal world, adding a 0.75 reliable parallel part increases the overall reliability since the probability of both failing simultaneously is (1-0.8)*(1-0.75), or 0.05. But...this only works if the failure modes are independent. Real world example: the idea behind NASA funding two different crew vehicles for the ISS was supposed to work as I just described above. But since they share the one available docking port on the ISS, Starliner's failure tied up the docking port preventing Dragon Crew from using it. So NASA painted themselves into a corner where their failure probability was 1-(0.8*0.75), or 0.4, not 0.05. (assuming dragon's success rate is 0.8 and starlinger's 0.75).

@futurebird @infinimatt In Dorset, on the walk from Lulworth Cove to Durdle Door, signage warning about slippy paths. They want to tell native speakers of the queen's crownical english that "slippy" isn't a word? (I have a better photo somewhere, but that was about 4 laptops ago)

@futurebird @marshray Agreed. The instancename/@username format that browsers barf on is passing idiotic for reach and growth. Don't stick a fucking @ in the URL. This is the WWW. OTOH, the difficulty using mastodon does tend to keep out the riffraff. For now.

@futurebird One of my nepenthes that I set up to deal with fruit flies instead is chowing on ants. things always go wrong when we try to introduce a population control species.
