Well, another beekeeper totally screwed up a swarm capture at our local elementary school. The vacuumed up the bees instead of boxing them up and waiting until evening. Thus leaving half the swarm wondering where the queen went, and not solving the problem at all. I was called by one of the teachers... nothing I could do. Although most of the bees crawled into my bag of bee gear and I took them home. #beekeeping #failure

First time for a bunch of bees to move directly into my beekeeping gear, ha ha ha. Kind of like being the Pied Piper. They followed me in from the parking lot, and even before I put on my bee suit there were 50 bees surrounding me. The liked the bag better than the box of wax.... I just zipped the 60-100 bees in my pocket there and put them in the car. #beekeeping

@ai6yr will you be able to save them?

@cvvhrn No idea. They thought I was the queen, LOL. I took them outside here where they might find another of the recent swarms here that have not been relocated yet, and might get adopted. We'll see.

@cvvhrn Just checked... the ones in my bag were all were adopted and moved to one of the swarms that arrived here recently! (very quickly, too... that worked out!)

@ai6yr That's a happy story, didn't know that was possible. I don't think that would work with ants. @futurebird myrme, what do you think?

@artemesia Well, if it's the Argentine super colony, you can take any ants you find and they will be accepted by their cousins elsewhere.

@ai6yr @artemesia Yeah that's your only hope... though some army ants will also join a new colony if their queen is gone too... but most ants not so much.

@futurebird @ai6yr I wonder how army ants or bees signal that intention.

@artemesia @ai6yr Normally they have another ant write a recommendation letter, & letter if introduction to present on arrival. No no, not really. LOL I guess I have letters on the brain, I've had to write so many!Ants can tell by the hydrocarbons on their exoskeletons who will be a "good fit" for the organization and who isn't welcome-- ants that can move colonies have compatible hydrocarbons. Some ants even impersonate others to do nefarious things!#antCrimehttps://sauropods.win/@futurebird/112516154200483797

@futurebird @ai6yr "Ants can tell by the hydrocarbons on their exoskeletons"So you're saying they do it via farts.

@futurebird @artemesia Hmm, I'm curious if bees do some similar screening. They will accept workers into a hive, but NOT guard bees or raiders.

@artemesia @ai6yr They have a pore on their thorax that makes the hydrocarbons. Now their trails? Harder not to distinguish from farts.
