@kyle The knitting industry switched from hand knitting (a family enterprise) to machine knitting (industry). That put many families out of work.Stockings were switching from sewn to knitted. The knitted stockings caught on (they stretched and did not gather or wrinkle). Queen Elizabeth I rejected the knitting machine because it would put people out of work. The knitting machine moved to France. Later, it came back to England and thrived. People couldn't feed their children. Life got ugly.

@kyle The public library here has Blood in the Macine on order. I've added my name to a growing reserve list. The story of the Luddites peaked my interest in knitting boards, knitting needles, and knitting machines. I'll probably buy a copy before my name comes up on the reserve list. I'm very anxious to read the book.

@clive Expected useful life for it's intended purpose helps determine quality of product I'm willing to pay. Sometimes I want a single use item other times I want something that will still be in use multiple generations from now."Quality" is a 4-letter-word to many manufacturers. They prefer to talk about "planned obsolescence."

@kyle Wow!Doing it yourself costs a few evening dinners at nice resturants, and a lot of time, but much less than taking it into the dealership. Having the knowledge, skill, and ability is worth so much more.

@slashdot Only that which is accessible online is vulnerable.Trouble is many keep all data online when the only thing that needs to be online is one app and it's data. Time to decide what needs to be accessible online and does not need to be accessible online.

@kyle I'm very sorry you lost loved ones. lTime helps, but the pain is always there.I like your idea. A kind of living timeline that goes with you for years to come. Adding a legend known to your family is a great idea - details fade from memory over time.

@drahardja Thank you! I was flying between Seattle and Denver at 0000 GMT on 01-Jan-2000 I remember the pilot came on the intercom to announce that all was well about 5 min past midnight GMT. Everyone was relieved.I picked that flight because it was only about half full. After I bought the ticket I realized why it was so empty when the others were booked solid.

@endDRM Overdrive and it's evil offspring Libby. But the real culprits are the publishers. They claim it's so authors get a cut - it isn't - that cut is much closer to a paper thin sliver. The publishers get the lion's share while the resale market drys up. Libraries are licensed to only loan the books X number of times before buying another license. The consumer pays one price to purchase a book. A library pays that plus more to lend it X times. There's more - archiving.

When ya need a seam, but ya don't want a seam to show then grafting is a good solution. The problem is that there are so many steps and it looks like a tangled mess for the first few stitches. It shouldn't be any more difficult than putting new laces in shoes.I'm going to make a tool that makes learning the kitchener stitch as close to learning to lace shoes as I can. I'll let you know how I get on.#Knitting #Grafting #KitchenerStitch

@kyle Hurricane lamps are great decoration when they aren't needed and a lifesaver when they are :) A generator in the back yard is hard to justify unless the public utility is really flaky. When I lived in WY I almost bought one, but decided against it.I hope your power is restored soon - we depend very heavily on power being there any time we need it, and we need it a lot. Traveling to get to a coffeeshop or library just to use their wifi gets old real quick.

@protonprivacy Proton sometimes announces new stuff by way of an email, sometimes they don't. Another avenue to find out what Proton is up to is to watch their blog by way of RSS feeds https://proton.me/blog/feed there are lots of open source RSS readers out there.

@aral Had to look that one up <blushing> by the time a project has gone through whatever SDLC is in use and reaches the Developer a vast majority of the issues should have been ironed out. Oddly, such is seldom the case - frustrating as that is. However, the other side of that is the Developer sittng on a project for whatever reason and not making progress - they don't know how to solve whatever problem is blocking them, they are overloaded, or they shouldn't be on the project.

@aral @juergen_hubert @FantasticalEconomics Regime incompetence helps those who hoover up evidence, but unfortunately, doesn't impede the regime.
