While I was halfway through Your Face Belongs To Us, another brand new book arrived! Blood In The Machine tells the historical story of the Luddites: 19th century weavers and other fiber artisans who violently rose up to protest their being replaced by automated looms that only required unskilled factory labor to operate.A book that sits at the intersection of three of my interests (weaving, history and technology) with modern allusions? Count me in!#reading #books #weaving #history

@kyle The knitting industry switched from hand knitting (a family enterprise) to machine knitting (industry). That put many families out of work.Stockings were switching from sewn to knitted. The knitted stockings caught on (they stretched and did not gather or wrinkle). Queen Elizabeth I rejected the knitting machine because it would put people out of work. The knitting machine moved to France. Later, it came back to England and thrived. People couldn't feed their children. Life got ugly.

@apples_and_pears No spoilers! Hah just kidding, actually that particular sequence you have outlined is something he covers in the preface as a setup to the Luddites and automated looms coming into existence. Fascinating read so far.

@kyle The public library here has Blood in the Macine on order. I've added my name to a growing reserve list. The story of the Luddites peaked my interest in knitting boards, knitting needles, and knitting machines. I'll probably buy a copy before my name comes up on the reserve list. I'm very anxious to read the book.

@kyle y'all need to stop suggesting more books... I have to live to be 200 to read what's on my list now! 😜

@jzb I've only been able to make time by being much more critical of what television series I indulge in. For every new show I try out, I weigh it against "would I rather give this or the next book on my stack 12 hours of my attention?"Let's be honest, a lot of shows out there are Cs or C pluses at best with respect to writing and acting. I no longer give those my time because it robs me from doing all these other things I love.

@jzb I should also clarify that I give books the same critical eye. There are just too many *excellent* books out there I haven't read, in particular major works of literature, to give poorly-written pulp too much time. When I start reading something and it's not well written (for fiction) or interesting (non-fiction) I set it aside. The interesting thing is, when you spend most of your time reading/watching well-written stuff, the average stuff bothers you.
