@rspfau I agree that upper division labs intended for students who will likely peruse a career in a lab environment should focus on the job skills seen in actual lab settings. A 400 level genetics class indeed should emphasize following established protocols with the needed precision. On the other hand 100 level science classes, especially those without prerequisites that are likely the GE classes for non-science majors, should emphasis scientific reasoning and iterative problem analysis through experimentation more than discipline specific lab skills.I honestly don't care if the HR person doesn't remember how inductors work even though that is a core part of our business. I would like them to be able to determine that neither his coffee maker nor his printer are working because the power strip they plugged them both into has tripped its breaker. There will never be a lab on fixing common office appliances but there are skills we can teach people that even HR might be able to apply.@freemo

@freemo @icedquinn @mzan Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.

@realcaseyrollins Go where. This is like cops kettling a group of protesters and ordering them to disperse, then using that a justification for their arrest. Only in this case the IDF will be justifying genocide.

@jeffGenocide is usually insanely popular where ever it occurs, and there is always a justification for it. Almost always is that some group of people is so dangerous and savage that they must be wiped out of existence. In the 20th century the world took a good look at itself and what justifying genocide had led to and decided the world was to dangerous and violent a place to ever allow another genocide to be justified by any nation for any reason no matter how locally popular. The people world said, "Never again!" and promised one another that that we would not fail to intervene to stop genocide no matter what the supposed justification. @JohnLoader6 @CStamp @thepoliticalcat @GW @LALegault

@freemo You thing that's bad compare a Hollywood sword fight to the real thing. In fact if you start paying attention to the folly sound you will drive yourself nuts because everything in a movie makes a cliche noise. For example principle actors in movies always walk on hollow wooden boxes or loose gravel while an extra in the same scene walks over the same surface like a ghost on Sunday.

@realcaseyrollins The Hamas invasion was a complete intelligence failure on the part of the IDF. They were completely unable to infiltrate the terrorist organization as they have in the past. I don't know if this is actually true but I read somewhere that Hamas only recruited people for this mission who could show that the IDF had killed both their parents. What they are doing right now is not destroying the terrorists, it is radicalizing the ones who will attack Israel in the 2030's just as the ones who attacked this time were radicalized in the 2014 retaliations.Israel needs to figure out how to defend itself without radicalizing more terrorist than it kills if it wants to shorten rather than lengthen this conflict.

@freemo It is the word used in the region to describe the removal of Palestinians from their homes in 1948 in order to found the modern state of Israel. In the mouth of an Israeli Cabinet Minister, it is a statement that Palestinians will be forcibly and permanently removed from Gaza."Nakba" is no more a generic term in Israel and Palestine than "9/11" is just a generic date for people in the US.

@noagendashownoteslinks Exemption #1: The toll may not be charged at any time public transit is closed or out of service. People who commute one way while public transit is unavailable can apply for exemption for the other direction as well.If it is after BART/Muni is closed for the day, or a line is out of service or station closed for police action then no road toll.

@Wolven So help me out here. A group of disability rights advocates including many people with actual disabilities developed a more nuanced set of questions that align with how disability is surveyed internationally, and that is bad because a simplistic summary of the data would show fewer people in an already poorly defined “disabled” categorization? Why is it not better to have better, more detailed, more comparable data and make the conversation about how we address the challenges that this data will show?

@freemo We can say with certainty that concert pitch (actually set by A4 being standardized at 440hz today) was higher in the past - as high as A = 401hz. Not every instrument is tunable. Bells and some double reed instruments will never change pitch over their life times. By looking at bells from the 15th and 16th c we can tell that music was in general pitched somewhat higher then today. The big innovation in modern tuning is equal temperament. All modern digital tuning has an precisely equal ratio between each half step. (about 1.059 to 1) This makes music work like you describe. Start on any pitch and the music will sound the same if the relative intervals are followed. However much more than absolute pitch, relative pitch is hard without modern measurement methods, Prior to the 1700s the most common tuning was to tune in pure 5ths where every 5th was tuned by ear to a 2/3 ratio. It works pretty well until you get to the point where you go from the end of the circle of fifths back to what should be the note you started on. You find you are off by a scotch less than a quarter tone. This terrible sounding interval is a "wolf fifth" because it howls. In pure fifths each key had its own flavor and so it was important to play a piece in the key it was written in. The major thirds that define the modern major chords are the most effected by these variations which explains why many pieced before JS Back and company are dominated by 4ths and 5ths that are safer in a pure-fifths tuning.Bach's innovation which caught on across western music was to "fudge the thirds" to make them all sound similar - giving us the last common tuning the so called well-tempered tuning.
