@nydel@RicardusIndeed! The TOS era are too... glitzy, the DS9 era is too dull to stand out, VOY era seems like it'd still have problems with it. and ENT and DIS are too boilersuit-y (DIS to a lesser extent tbh)

Mastodon bleeped at me and I think it fucked with my audio settings somehow because although alsamixer doesn't show it, my music moved entirely to the left headphone ?

@ElizafoxWhat Picard/Guinan said about Data in A Measure of A Man is still really poignant and applies here tbh

FYI: Travellers is the best of hard-scifi on TV right now. And on Dec 14th Netflix is dropping season three! You know you want to binge watch it! You know you do!

Also it presents as action first but I assure you it is HARD sci-fi, with some action as window-dressing.

If you're a REAL musician you don't buy your plectrums (unless you see a particularly nice one at a flea market), everyone else buys them and you gratefully accept their donations.

@TheGibson I feel that's kind of asking what the best community is. Some communities are better than others but I don't think it's so much of a pyramid as a plateau. After all, it depends on what you're looking for or what you expect.

@RicardusI personally despise it because the idea of an AI going bad is so over-thought compared to the alternatives. We don't know the rules of mind emulation yet.Where is the AI that takes years to simulate a sentence (computationally hard)Where is the AI that consists of a building of humans computing by hand... who are bad at maths? (exploits "natural" error...)Where is the AI consisting of trained red ants (one breed of ants as more computationally complex than a turing machine)

@Ricardus To be honest I don't mind it being a trope as much as I mind it being an *uninteresting*, and potentially misinformative trope. There are much worse things to be worrying about than Evil AI, like, why the hell are their starships using SQL, and why are they not sanitizing their inputs?! :D

RT @jbensnyder@twitter.comToday in shitty machine learning startups, this company claims to predict IQ, personality, and violent tendencies by applying deep learning to facial features and bone structure. That's phrenology. You just made the ML equivalent of a racist uncle.https://twitter.com/jbensnyder/status/1064759174574280704

I finished up a bunch of projects while I was away from here, including:Koios - a universal database-free file tagger(https://gitlab.com/finnoleary/koios)Zhmenu - a robust featureful dmenu-like replacement and input method(https://gitlab.com/finnoleary/zhmenu) Wisp - A fast, smart, lispy HTML output language(https://gitlab.com/finnoleary/wisp-new)SpotifyC (WIP) - C Interface to the Spotify Web API and Spotify command line client(https://gitlab.com/finnoleary/spotifyc)Boosts would be deeply appreciated as more users = less bugs.

audio electronics seem so cool but I can never get the hang of the digital tools, and I don't have the money right now to invest in buying kits

@Ricardus VCV Rack, literally anything that involves audio on a computer is either too complex or too simple/tedious

@Ricardus yeah but I have a feeling that I'd have better luck trying things out irl than I do on the computer? idk
