I mean no disrespectful to military veterans. I do wish, however, that more public servants got the same level of recognition as they do in my country (US) do. It's always seemed weird to me that we revere people so much for a particular career choice. Like many other occupations, I am grateful there are people willing to choose to do it because I wouldn't want to. Yes, it can be a tough and dangerous job (the fatality rate seems to be similar to roofing but lower than logging or fishing/hunting workers) but it's not volunteer work. There is compensation and benefits for choosing to do it. Why don't we have IRS Agent parades and give discounts to Clerks of Court and offer an earnest "Thank you for your service" to all educators?I am open to having my mind changed. I know I often fail to consider some important angle that is obvious to others.

@galacticstone@mastodon.social This was a truly difficult decision. And now I must investigate Mission Hill because I'd never heard of it.

I met Julie back in 1997. We were starting at a new school together and quickly fell in with a small, tight-knit group of weirdo friends - forming bonds that are still strong today.Life wasn't always kind to Julie. She grew up in a family even poorer than mine. She lost her mother in high school. She became a single mother at a young age to a son born with a disease that left him immunocompromised and intellectually disadvantaged. She had a high-conflict first marriage that ended in a bitter divorce. Her father was hospitalized early in the COVID-19 pandemic where he caught and succumbed to the disease. Despite everything, Julie's spirit never broke. We saw one another through a lot of ups and downs and always had one another's backs. She was my "TMI" friend - we would share (or overshare) anything with each other. I'm not a socially inclined person but we would meet up for lunch pretty regularly or attend Orchid Society meetings together. It's rare, at least in my life, to find a friend with so much overlapping taste and shared interests.Last year, she suffered for months trying to get a diagnosis before her doctors took her seriously. When the diagnosis finally came, it had progressed to stage IV endometrial cancer. Less than 15 months later, she is gone.I don't know why I'm sharing this with a bunch of people who never got to meet her. You would have loved her, though. I really don't know what I'm going to do without her in my life.

I'm beginning to genuinely suspect, with all the caveats that come with self-diagnosis, that I might have mild undiagnosed ASD.I also think a lot of people think this about themselves and that the claim does a disservice to this part of the neurodivergent community.I am questioning why I am having this monologue "out loud" but, I don't know, maybe someone can tell me something useful or say "I used to think that about myself but instead it was...."

I hate senses of obligation, at least when I am the beneficiary. I feel like cynicism plays a role in this feeling. I don't want things to be performative.

This thought brought to you by my fiancé thinking it was weird that I even considered he might not go with me to my friend's funeral tomorrow. He is being super supportive, as is his obligation, but I also know this isn't how anyone wants to spend a day off and, in his shoes, I would welcome an out if presented with one. I am misconfigured, though, so I don't know if that is right.

Are there any languages that have separate "we"s for second person exclusive vs second person inclusive? They are so different and using the same word for both concepts isn't ideal.

My Sonicare stopped working recently so I was planning to just replace it. On a whim of curiosity, I decided to look into replacing the battery. It turns out is not only possible but relatively easy with some beginner-level soldering skills*. My replacement battery arrived today, I made the swap, and now my expensive but great toothbrush works again. That was less wasteful and way cheaper than replacing the toothbrush!*Beginner-level is, despite over a decade of trying on various projects, still my soldering skill level.

@amadeus@mstdn.social I have two pairs of bone conducting headphones: AfterShokz Aeropex and the slightly newer Shokz OpenRun Pro. Both are fine for my needs but I am far from an audiophile. I've heard people with more discerning ears complain about the lower tones being muddied but it's not something I notice.

@gavi@wandering.shop My only beef with antiperspirants are that I can't find any that don't come in plastic. For that reason, I've used just deodorant for years. I had a similar problem finding a plastic-free toothpaste that included fluoride but I finally solved that one. It bothers me so much that the anti-plastic-waste products also tend to be from companies who peddle antiscientific appeals to nature.

Changing doctors was such a good decision and I'm upset at myself for not doing it sooner. I've been experiencing a recurring and alarming symptom for the last 17 months. Every time it would happen, my previous doctor would run the same blood panel and put me on Prednisone 🤢️. Then, a day or two later, their office would call to let me know my results were normal. And that was it. No further investigation even though the underlying reason for the symptom was still a mystery.I've seen my new doctor ONCE and they have already ordered a different blood panel, a new lab test, and referred me to a specialist who took two biopsies. The new doctor also mentioned referring me to a hematologist if biopsies don't offer any answers and an oncologist if the mystery persists after that. I have follow-up appointments for both the specialist and then my doctor already scheduled. I finally feel like I'm being listened to, my concerns are being taken seriously, and I'm on the road to figuring this out.

I made a huge thing of black bean soup using a new recipe and, to be honest, it wasn't all that good. The recipe was fine; I just forgot that black beans have a mild sweetness to them that I'm not into. I like a much beanier-flavored legume like a lentil.
