@anthk @f4grx @ploum Why on earth should the onus be on someone who was abused to invest their time, energy and emotional labor in asking for an apology from their abuser?

@ploum @anthk @f4grx @josemanuel It is astonishing to me how far some will go to defend positions or people they’ve become invested in. You’re *really* blaming someone who’s clearly been treated with disrespectful contempt for *not reaching out to the person who treated them that way*??

Popping up real quickly with an urgent request: For my book, I’m interested in hearing a firsthand description of the current situation in #Rojava, including accounts of how it has evolved since the Turkish incursion of November 2019. This state of affairs is dynamic, complex and confusing to outside observers, and I’m bound to get some things wrong, but I want to be as accurate as I possibly can be. Your help is vital, and hugely appreciated – please do share. #AANES

Just…hug your kids, spend time with your parents, cuddle your pets, tell your friends how much they mean to you. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/jul/25/gulf-stream-could-collapse-as-early-as-2025-study-suggests

@kissane I’m glad you mentioned what happened in Myanmar, and why. I’m glad any time someone mentions what happened in Myanmar, and why. I no lie want “Zuckerberg” to sound like “Himmler” in the ears of generations to come.

I know we all like to clown on techbros, and they certainly do make it easy. But I have to remind myself that as recently as 12 years ago, I *genuinely, sincerely* believed that IPv6 and universal open APIs and so on were an important step toward species-wide liberation. Should I have known better, even then? Yeah, probably. But the point is, I eventually grew out of it. Maybe they will too. Be their offramp, if you can?

Well, beloved, it’s real. You can preorder my book “Beyond Hope” as of now. If you suspect that #MutualAid, #municipalism or the example of #Rojava suggest strategies to survive a hot, dangerous future, if you want to learn from examples ranging from the Black Panther survival programs to the solidarity clinics of Greece, or if you’re interested in a concrete working-out of #solarpunk ideas in the form of the #Lifehouse community resilience hub, this is the book for you. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Beyond-Hope-Collective-Mutual-Emergency/dp/1788738357

Somewhere beneath all the other, rawer heartbreaks of Gaza, or coiled around them, is the specific grief I feel as a Jew that all of this is being inflicted under a flag bearing the star of my people — that wherever it appears, this symbol will only ever again remind people of this theft, anguish and suffering. It will be cursed by history, and it's hard to argue anything but that this is rightly so.

To accompany the forthcoming release of "Lifehouse," I'm commissioning short pieces for a pamphlet- or zine-style publication on the theme of Making Do in the Long Emergency, or broadly, the place where climate systems collapse intersects #mutualaid and #solarpunk. I've got a few friends and collaborators lined up, but let me know if you've got a project in mind you'd like to see included.

@Wolven There’s a Larry Niven short story from the ‘70s, about a wave of suicides that follow the confirmation that there are alternate dimensions nearby – people couldn’t take the sense of futility that surrounded every choice, knowing that other close-by versions of them were exploring every permutation of that choice. I suspect something not a million miles from this is already subtly happening with automation and deaths of despair.

Really, though: if you’re serious about making headway with any kind of degrowth/“postgrowth” strategy, enacting a ban on advertising is where you want to start.

@malteengeler Advertising, virtually by definition, involves the cultivation of desire for things we don’t need.

I am curious about the impact of so-called “AI” on the labor market for illustrators, specifically, as I think that’s a really useful canary. I can’t find anything good, though – just buzzwordy, speculative noise from content farms or LinkedIn. Can anyone point me at solid, empirical work on this?

I kinda buried the lede yesterday: my next book “Lifehouse: Taking Care of Ourselves in A World On Fire” is finally available for pre-order from Verso! It’s about how we organize ourselves as communities to survive the climate-systems collapse unfolding all around us, drawing on lessons from the Black Panther survival programs, Occupy Sandy and the Crisis-era Greek solidarity clinics straight through to municipalism in Spain and democratic confederalism in Rojava! https://www.versobooks.com/en-gb/products/2536-lifehouse

Beloved, I am begging you: *document your mutual-aid practices*. If there’s one thing I’ve learned in my conversations with activists, it’s how much of the practical insight they developed – going back to the 1960s, but as recent as COVID – now resides only in individual memory, and is brought forth only if anyone thinks to ask for it specifically.

This is the Rev. David Black of First Presbyterian Church in Chicago. As many of you know, he was an early, heartful supporter of the Lifehouse work, and has encouraged the trustees of First Church to understand that work as part of their witness. I get the discomfort many folks have for organized religion, in any of its forms and for excellent reason, but Pastor David walks the talk, and I have never been prouder to know him than I am right now. May his efforts prevail.https://www.reddit.com/r/pics/comments/1nn8ffx/a_priest_was_assaulted_by_masked_ice_agents/
