"We need more of Richard Stallman, not less"Or why RMS has been right since 40 years and the problem is that we could not hear him.https://ploum.net/2023-06-19-more-rms.html

@ploum For the last 30 years, businesses and proponents of Open Source, including Linus Torvalds, have been decrying the GPL because of the essential right of "doing business" aka "privatising the common".That's it precisely. And I fear - I may not be right - that people fight for this because they imagine themselves on the side of the winners in this. But when the commons are privatized, we all lose.

@jens @ploum Nice comment reply and good disclaimer ploum. I was thinking we could chat about this more?.. but then I thought why.. ! (I'll probably think on that more as non-public chat if there is underlying aim for me or us... and suggestions welcome!)

@ploum The legacy of RMS and the FSF is, without a single doubt, EXTREMELY important and relevant today. he was right, he did the right thing, the concept of copyleft is a jewel that offers the best protection for opensource/free software.HOWEVER, the current public figure of RMS is unacceptable.Because of this, I dont use the GPL anymore for projects. I have found that the CECILL-2.0 offers similar copyleft (and gpl compatibility) without being linked to the FSF.

@ploum Copyleft, invented 40 years ago during the unix wars, is the paradox of tolerance applied to open source. MIT/BSD is absolutist free speech. It doesnt work. But you cant tell to direct and indirect victims of RMS that we need more of RMS. We need more copyleft, that was invented by RMS 40 years ago. That, yes. Please be more sensitive.

@ploum@mamot.fr >Without Non-copyleft Open Source, there would be no proprietary MacOS, OSX nor Android. There would be no Facebook, no Amazon. We created all the components of Frankenstein’s creature and handed them to the evil professor.I could not agree more. Thank you for this article.

@SuperDicq @f4grx : that’s a very interesting questions.I’ve witnessed RMS being rude. I’ve read messages from him which could be badly interpreted (even if, to my knowledge, he clarified all of them in a way that I find acceptable or modified his opinions). But I’ve never heard of any victims of him, direct or indirect.

@ploum @SuperDicq I have a tendency to exagerate but I will not delete that message. His bad behaviour has shoked enough people so it should not be defended. RMS should sincerely apologize, at least. As a leader he has a minimum of social responsibility.

@anthk @ploum The only time I met him I was forced into doing something I was not comfortable or willing to do, so that was a direct experience of his abusive personnality. So fuck off with this lame defense, I cant defend RMS, and I will support the victims of his bad behaviour.

@f4grx @anthk : thanks for this message. This is very important as I never heard first-hand account of people having be coerced into something by him. This change my mind about the way he is criticized (something on which I have not a clear stance)

@ploum @anthk I saw him at the electrolab for 10 minutes. And I did not know it was him.During the 10 minutes-he showed me his passport to identify itself without a word-he ridiculed me for not speaking english loud enough (I am not a native speaker)-he made me repeat english sentences I had not pronunced correctly, telling me so,-he made me shout loud a random useless sentence, several times, until it was loud enough for anyone in the room to hear it.

@ploum @anthk That sounds benign, but I still respected him at the time, so I did what he asked, and I felt extremely disgusted after that. He was not "thankful" but rather believed that so many things were due to him.I left the room asap (public space!)My feeling was "fuck you, asshole", but I did not have the balls to tell that. I should have told him.He used his reputation to force me, and I will never forget that. I keep the "fuck you asshole" for our next encounter.

@f4grx @ploum Did you try to ask him to apoligize at least in private by mail? RMS is not the typical stubborn guy who refuses to change its view on social norms.

@anthk @f4grx @ploum Why on earth should the onus be on someone who was abused to invest their time, energy and emotional labor in asking for an apology from their abuser?

@adamgreenfield Because RMS is known for not being exactly good at social interactions and he would have probably appreciated being told that he was being an asshole instead of being badmouthed on the Internet some time later?Because @f4grx could have misinterpreted his intention when he told him to speak louder? Maybe RMS felt that he was being shy and wanted (misguidedly) to help him open up? (Think of the improvised poem scene in Dead Poets Society.)Because understanding the other person’s point of view would help him avoid these situations in the future and give him some closure?I can think of more reasons, but I’m tired of typing the obvious.@anthk @ploum

@ploum @anthk @f4grx @josemanuel It is astonishing to me how far some will go to defend positions or people they’ve become invested in. You’re *really* blaming someone who’s clearly been treated with disrespectful contempt for *not reaching out to the person who treated them that way*??

@ploum This blog post misses the point. No one is arguing that copyleft is wrong. Drew's post criticizes the FSF, not copyleft. See also: https://drewdevault.com/2023/06/19/Reforming-the-free-software-message.html
