@jeff this is from Les Misérables, which is a fictionalized account of the rebellion of 1832. This was a republican, anti-monarchist rebellion. Thanks for coming into my feed with something that has absolutely nothing to do with what I posted. How did you even stumble across my post, and what made you think that this sort of response, whether or not it it was informed or ignorant (it was the latter) was at all appropriate? Good grief. Take your hot takes somewhere else.

@grammargirl In the world I want to live in, whoever reads the email first. In this world? Totally unsure.

@grammargirl it shouldn’t make much of a difference, but it will make at least a little difference, especially when you’re logging in after a restart. Plus a clean desktop is soothing (he says, as he glances at his chaotic desktop).

@grammargirl @Estrella The only screen readers I’ve used are the ones that are built into macOS and iOS, and like Estelle said, the quotes aren’t explicitly stated (and I don’t know of any relevant options for those screen readers to enable explicit indication of quotes). The existence of quotes does, I believe, prompt a slight pause at each quote boundary, which I find to be pretty good at signaling what is quoted (along with other context clues, naturally).

@grammargirl my favorite instance of this. It’s still a mystery, even with the doorbell cams! 👽 🛸 https://www.nola.com/news/politics/so-what-was-the-boom-no-clear-answers-but-data-and-science-shed-some-light/article_7bb776a0-861e-11ec-8eb5-3b95b502e9a4.html

@grammargirl I would love to know where the creator of this survey lives. Down here in the swamp, it’s rare to find a house without some sort of AC (either central or window units) because without it life would be nigh intolerable during the summer.

@grammargirl if you want its usefulness coldly quantified in comparison to other phalanges and you don’t mind the macabre, look at a pricing schedule for dismemberment insurance.

@grammargirl my first query, “what's the word order of Tunica”, failed. It tried to determine the word order of the anatomical structures called “tunica" rather than the language. asking “what's the word order of the Tunica language?" it at least knew that it didn't know the answer (the Tunica language wikipedia page needs major work; i should fix that). I do LOVE LOVE LOVE that it cites its sources. I'll keep an eye on it!

@grammargirl Google suffers from the same issue; only 2 of the top 10 hits are about the language (the others being about anatomy). Looks like you're right: if Google surfaces good sources, Perplexity can do a good job of synthesizing them into prose with citations. If Google surfaces bad results, Nelly bar the door!

@interfluidity you can of course look to boxing or wresting for weight classes, but the panoply of classifications in disability sports is the best example of the kind of complex classification systems that *already exist* in organized athletics. Obviously gender is a classifier there as well, but there are tons of ways to slice it. Sadly, something like this requires thoughtfulness and openness, both of which seem to be in short supply these days. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Para-athletics_classification
