@ParadeGrotesque Daimler (Mercedes-Benz) also are quite heavy users: https://moba.i.daimler.com/bai-cars/ba/foss/content/en/pdfs/FOSS_License_C-Class_205.pdf1744 pages of software licenses! They even have this - enter the VIN, get the licenses: https://moba.i.daimler.com/bai-cars/ba/foss/content/en/licence_agreement.htmlAbout #BMW as a automotive company: they sell total crap. Think about them as the worst parts (inabilities, management failures, dumbing down customers and so on) of Microsoft, Apple, Google, Oracle all merged into one. Examples:1) try to find BMW that handles better than small hatchbacks: https://www.youtube.com/user/km77video/videosHere is for the Ford Fiesta: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ynkQCkBvXQs2) "Fixing" a $100 000+ cars with a cable ties? Ohh, yes: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2018/RCRIT-18V473-2843.pdf (page 5 have a picture)3) Mess up the construction of straight-6 engine? Ohh, yes. (the straight-6 is "easy" because of some physical properties of its principal construction and it is a very old and proven design). https://youtu.be/GVavSEqSRs8?t=3491 "where is the hone of the cylinder liner" (the diagonal lines that we are able to see on the cylinder wall linings). https://youtu.be/GVavSEqSRs8?t=3031 - the crankshaft support is intentionally engineered to be weaker. So it is guaranteed that the engine eats itself. The aluminium bolts I'll NOT even comment :)

@clacke The original discussion (thanks to Wikipedia) for more details: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/comp.os.minix/wlhw16QWltIThere Mr. Torvalds wrote this:"True, linux is monolithic, and I agree that microkernels are nicer. Witha less argumentative subject, I'd probably have agreed with most of whatyou said. From a theoretical (and aesthetical) standpoint linux looses. If the GNU kernel had been ready last spring, I'd not have bothered toeven start my project: the fact is that it wasn't and still isn't. Linuxwins heavily on points of being available now."

@redstarfish There is another important point in the piece: "It is a fairly specific workflow that is a challenge for some newer developers to engage with. As an example, my partner submitted a patch to OpenBSD a few weeks ago, and he had to set up an entirely new mail client which didn’t mangle his email message to HTML-ise or do other things to it, so he could even make that one patch. That’s a barrier to entry that’s pretty high for somebody who may want to be a first-time contributor.”Someone is using a tool which he doesn't understand - doesn't know its limitations. Seems like - hmmm, I have a screwdriver but I need to unbolt a hex bolt. Obviously all people that have wrench (spanner) and know how to use them have to start using screwdrivers. Obviously all hex bolts are "dead end" and have to be replaced.(sarcasm)In general all people in tech that request and suggest "changes, moving forward and so on" MUST BE treated for medical conditions ONLY with experimental drugs. Obviously it's not a good idea to use something proven and working when there is an "innovation" behind the corner :thinkingcat:

@strypey I have one complaint about #BandCamp site redesign that happened late in 2019. They turned off the RSS feeds that they had.I've tried to find a contact e-mail but I've only found their Twitter status account.

@yngmar @Jkp Good job :)Hint: When I was replacing a dying button microswitch on my mouse I've burned some part of a PCB trace. I've used an insulated wire from an UTP cable.

@sir I would like to share something about the actual T-shirts. I have a T-shirt from 2018. The quality of the materials is extremely low. I'm providing pictures. The grey one T-shirt is bought from here: https://www.newegg.com/p/N82E16800991013The #Hacktoberfest one is worn and washed no more than 10 times. And it is only 50% cotton (which gives me itching on the skin). I've stopped wearing it.The grey one is worn and washed more than 250 times. It's a 100% cotton. I have it more than 5 years and wear it at home at least once a week. And this T-shirt is not the oldest one that I wear - the current champion is 10 years old and counting.Take a note of how much textile fibre lint (fluff) there is. Compare it with the other T-shirt.One part of the process to get hi-quality cotton fabric is removing the short fibres. You loose material on the way but you are getting a lot more durable fabric.More about the fluff/lint:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lint_(material)https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20150709-the-curious-truth-about-belly-button-fluff

@fatboy I've checked the link. Also checked these two:1) "Fibers such as wool, cotton, polyester, nylon and acrylic have a tendency to pill the most, but wool pilling diminishes over time as non-tenacious wool fibers work themselves free of the fabric and break away, whereas pilling of synthetic textiles is a more serious problem, because the stronger fibers hold on to the pills preventing them from falling off." - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pill_(textile)2) Pilling is more noticeable on man-made fibers. This is mainly because natural fabrics shed loose fibers easily and less noticeably, while man-made fibers are notoriously strong, so the pills are anchored strongly to the fabric.>>>and<<<When a fabric is made from more than one fibre type, where one fibre is strong and one is weak (for example, polycotton) pilling will be more noticeable, because the weaker fibre wears and breaks, while the stronger fibre holds the pills to the cloth. - https://magnoliaco.com/fabric-pilling-information/So my understanding of these is: the pure cotton (or any other natural fibre) pills also but is less visible compared to the synthetic fibres. The effect is worsen when a cotton-polyester blend is used. Note to myself - there is an ISO standard to examine the pilling.

@pluralistic Can I add some minor but very important details. I've write them here just several minutes ago: https://mastodon.host/@_1751015/104977934089980338Most of the biggest business in the USA is controlled by three "shareholders". The boards of the biggest companies share quite a lot of "directors". And for the end: pension funds and insurance companies are "stimulated" to buy shares in the same companies. IMO a very good and very ridged scheme.

@monsieuricon There was this news in the beginning of year: https://www.cnx-software.com/2020/01/08/onio-zero-offers-a-risc-v-microcontroller-that-runs-without-battery/I've checked the announcement from the folks at University of Arkansas but it doesn't contain any concrete numbers (volts, ampers, power or anything similar).

@mdhughes Most people can't draw a bicycle that will work in the real world. Don't expect much from them :thinkingcat: "Gianluca Gimini has over the past six years asked more than 500 people to do exactly this. Drawing a bicycle from memory is harder than it sounds; of the 370 people who really tried (Gimini says a lot of people go rogue, when they realize their drawings aren't turning out right), about 25 percent managed to accurately sketch a bike."https://www.wired.com/2016/04/can-draw-bikes-memory-definitely-cant/

@hund I don't know if you have seen the idea about "interchangeable wardrobe":https://www.artofmanliness.com/articles/build-interchangeable-wardrobe/https://www.realmenrealstyle.com/build-interchangeable-wardrobe/https://www.themodestman.com/minimal-essential-wardrobe/When you know what you need in your wardrobe it's very easy. You just replace a cloth when it gets unsuitable for wearing (damage, doesn't fit, etc.) preserving the interchangeability.Added bonus: if you have the concept of "home cloths" (something you wear only at home and occasionally outside for short time) in your culture, use some of the worn out "official" cloths to restock the "home" ones.

@khm https://www.canon.co.uk/support/consumer_products/products/cameras/digital_compact/digital_ixus_series/digital_ixus_60.html?type=specifications Canon Digital IXUS 60/Powershot SD600. Bought new in 2006. I'm on the second battery - the original one loose charge very fast. It's size is around a pack of cigaretts, very short time from shut off to taking a picture (under 2 seconds), CCD gives a decent images no matter what (I dislike very much the quantum noise generators called CMOS imaging sensors), analog viewfinder - gives me around 400-500 pictures taken on one charge of the battery.

@Nikolai_Kingsley @yojimbo Douglas Adams is too soft and his speaking too "politically correct" (one of the quirks of the English society in general). Try Stanislaw Lem:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Star_Diaries"The Eighth Voyage" and"The Eleventh Voyage" are good places to start.
