my undergrad hort program, which I found out too late only had contacts into ornamental hort and none into small to mid-size market farming (I was depressed, not involved in the hort club, keeping my head down and ticking off credit hours on the degree plan, so, i got screwed). Met with my advisor in my last semester, “hey, just checking, but y’all got nothing for me, yeah?” “yeah, uh, but! I’ll try!!” she sent me WWOOF info… which is just… white kid on a gap year free labor… Anyway, my own woes aside, US ag largely relies on impoverished labor in every corner of the system, even in the cute small to mid size market farms.

@Cynane I’m afraid I don’t have any advice because I was able to ditch all of it somewhat easily. I wear a long skirt every day and don’t shave my legs— my hair is fine instead of course but it is dark and my skin is fair… When I stopped shaving I remember looking at a lot of art and illustrations that celebrates body hair, and I looked for photograph portraits of women with unshaved legs/under arms. I remember that helping my confidence, because I found those women beautiful.

@steph in the US “middle class” is used vaguely by a lot of folks. Yet many people/households who would self-describe themselves as middle class are only one or two financial misfortunes (horrible medical bill, out of work for longer than expected) away from being in serious long term trouble. In my expierence people will describe themselves as middle class when they’ve got a university degree, are salaried instead of having an hourly wage, and they want to think of themselves, “Well I certainly couldn’t be working class? I’m better than that!!”

@Nora Eat your last blackberries for the year on Michaelmas, because after St. Michael casts the devil down to earth the devil spits on all the blackberries out of spite. Leave a blanket or shawl outside on the eve of the feast of St. Bridget— she’ll bless them as she passes by that night. (If I’m knitting a baby blanket for a friend at that time of year I’ll leave the blanket out to be blessed, why the heck not)Ember days for foretelling weather of future months… I keep this one in mind as a curiosity, like groundhog day foretelling how much longer winter will or won’t be— I couldn’t tell you if the Friday of the last Advent Embertide foretold the weather of the following February, but I bet I used that useless bit of obscure christian trivia to procrastinate a little while that day

@Cousin_Isobel My mom, a nurse practitioner, found me a workbook that told me only about my menstrual cycle and breasts and nothing else. And I wasn’t squeamish about asking bodily function/physiology questions. However, I had seen porn by 13 or 14 without a sex talk whatsoever. Later porn became part of my self-perpetuating teenage depression self-loathing (idk, it was weird, I don’t really know how to describe it. I was disgusted at it, therefore disgusted at myself, so it was how I numbed out). And even though I had been watching porn for awhile it wasn’t until I was 17 or 18 that I asked my dad (biology professor) “Okay, zygote happens when the small and large gamete come together… But… how does the small gamete even… Get to where the ova, the large gamete, is??” (I was seriously, honestly, asking. I had no idea. I really have no idea how to account for this dissonance.) And that is the chain of events that eventually lead to me having a reverse sex talk with my mom. “Hey mom, why did you never tell me about sex? That was really unhelpful and I wish you would have done that.” I never really got a straight answer other than she just…. Forgot…. Yeah. But!! My best friend had a really really good upbringing when it came to sex. She was taught at a very young age in an age appropriate way. Her parents told her all the names of her body parts (not cutesy euphemistic names) and at some point as young child she asked straight up, “what’s sex?”. So at 5 years old it was described to her as involving those named body parts (which were taught to her to be private and only for herself, but not in a shaming way— just straightforward “they’re not for sharing and only for you”) and if she personally was involved with it that it would be hurtful for her, but that mom and dad may have sex because as grown ups they were able and responsible. My friend said that this put her mind pretty much at easy about it, as far as she remembers, because she was able to have it in her head as “we all have these private body parts which we keep to ourselves, mom and dad also both have private parts and mom and dad are grown ups so they know how to share their private parts safely, like how they can use knives and stuff and I can’t” (y’know, little kid logic) but it wasn’t blown up as this bug scary thing to run away from, or ignored and everyone just hopes a little kid doesn’t find anything or be exploited by anyone. And, last thought, and maybe unpopular, but if any grade school kids to teens were my responsibility, I wouldn’t let them watch the obviously soft-core porn that is some of those “kissing scenes” which the libfems feel oppressed about not being allowed to watch. 🙃 (There’s obviously sense to be had with this— seeing a bare adult butt in a non-sexual way? Whatever. Passionate kiss? Okay. Making out, hands all over the place, and all the scenes that escalate from that? Ehhhh, no. Life’s better without porn, kids)

Any of y’all spinsters avid campers and hikers? I’ve always wanted to go camping more and work up to going backpacking, but I don’t have anyone to go with regularly. My mother has sort of instilled in me an idea that solo-camping and solo-backpacking is an irresponsible level of risk to take (I’m in my early 20s, so I’m still working on sorting through my own informed judgements and what my anxious mother taught me, so 😅). I know there are satellite phones/gps beacons and such so hikers have a panic button in emergencies and such… Anyway, was just wondering if any of y’all with outdoors expirence have any perspective on solo-woman camping and backpacking.

@Ladyfat I'm never quite sure what folks mean exactly when they call something "empowering", what would be your definition? It's such a buzzword that I'm having a hard time pinning it down in my head...I'm in the somewhat-rural US Deep South and know/have met exactly zero women who wear hijab, so I'm not familiar with the extent of the social pressure on Muslim women and girls to wear hijab... but I am wondering if clothing/presentation itself empowers or dis-empowers (part of why I'm wondering about a solid definition). Like, if hijab is empowering/not empowering, then can we say if something like "Sl*t Walk" is or is not empowering?

@Magnesium Yep, for sure. I've a history of depression and anxiety and even though my Rx works otherwise I get "sundowners" in my luteal phase where I dread the next day for no reason whatsoever.

@Magnesium I'm borrowing the term sundowners here, haha. My mother takes care of a lot of home bound geriatric patients and many of them with mild dementia become anxious, agitated, and particularly confused after sundown; she and other nursing home medical staff call that "sundowners". I personally suspect my version of "sundowners" is PMDD ( https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/conditions-and-diseases/premenstrual-dysphoric-disorder-pmdd%3famp=true ) because it progressively gets worse until my period and then I feel okay until a week and a half before my period again, although my co-morbidities make a diagnosis less clear (and in any case, anti-depressants are the usual treatment for it, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯).

@Magnesium @GrumpyOldNurse SAD sounds like a solid hypothesis to me— last year around this time I got blood work back that said I was Vit. D deficient (and I was able to develop that over a Texas "winter" lol!) and taking supplements really helped with the fatigue I was dealing with then, but Vit. D deficiency can also have an effect on mood.

@jonimitchell my brother and SIL are in the same boat in TX. They warmed up in their car last night while heating up leftovers for themselves and some neighbors on a teeny camp stove in their apartment's parking lot... 🥶 I'm two hours north of them and we've not lost power yet thankfully, but there's supposed to be more freezing rain tonight.

@jonimitchell @FeartnTired Yeah, as I understand, it's a demand issue. What really makes this so much worse is that way back when, Texas decided to not be on the federal power grid. Other states in this situation can bring in power generated out of state by the federal power grid, we can't.

@mk @MountainSlideMama @Chronic-Yonic I was pleasantly surprised when I read earlier this week that ERCOT is a nonprofit, although it sounds like on the power generating side of things that concerns over making a profit was one of the many many things that lead to the mess we're in now. Right now I'm annoyed that renewable energy is being characterized as unreliable while as I understand it's natural gas energy thats underperforming the most right now (while solar is performing fine and wind is performing as expected for winter conditions). 🙄

"A Texas mayor said he resigned hours after he posted an insensitive message telling residents "only the strong will survive and the weak will parish" during a deadly and record-breaking winter storm."
