Does anybody else ever get a wave of sort of mini-depression/anxiety in the early evenings? When the sun goes down some nights I get this awful kind of generalised anxiety, like all my mental energy to cope just drained away. It's a bit like when you're dreading something, say public speaking or going in the next morning to a job you hate, but there's nothing specific like that I can hang it on. I wonder if it is hormonal as I'm usually OK again the next morning.

@Magnesium It’s not pleasant, my friend’s very elderly mother gets quite anxious about this time, that random free floating anxiety thing. I always think of that poem of Housman’s, How Clear, How Lovely Bright, when I’m feeling it, but in my case the time of day is random if it strikes. And it really is a rotten feeling, so sympathy.

@HebrideanHecate Thank you for the kind words. It really is unpleasant. I will look up the poem now.

@Magnesium Yep, for sure. I've a history of depression and anxiety and even though my Rx works otherwise I get "sundowners" in my luteal phase where I dread the next day for no reason whatsoever.

@Magnesium I don't think I could pinpoint it to a time of day. But frequently. Sometime I have hopes or concerns for something that will be or might be happening in the day and by early evening it's too late and it's over, so that is sort of a relief. But then there's the whole will I or won't I get sufficient sleep to function (for a given level of 'function') so that's fun.anyway, I hope you find a distraction for your mood.

@FeartnTired @Magnesium I sometimes wonder if in friend’s mother’s case is is thatshe could be thinking, even subconsciously, of the timeshe was caught in a very bad raid in Glasgow, during the war,and seeing the bombers come over at about that time of evening, when she starts getting fussed up.

@HebrideanHecate @FeartnTired @Magnesium sundowning is a thing for lots of elderly, though, even without a horrible experience like that. Compounding factors, I guess.

@HebrideanHecate @FeartnTired @Magnesium I suspect there's more of a connection between anxiety and dementia than the literature admits. I'm not saying that it's a causative relationship, but I think there's some kind of link. Maybe as simple as having dementia causes anxiety in the sufferers.IDK, now I'm rambling. Please excuse me while I fix another cup of coffee.

@GrumpyOldNurse @HebrideanHecate @FeartnTired @Magnesium I really wish there was better research on issues like this. My Dad was diagnosed with Parkinson's over 20 years ago. It is now quite severe and he has Parkinson's dementia. There is definitely a link to anxiety in his case. His symptoms are much worse when he is worried or stressed and also he gets anxious much more easily than before.

@Magnesium @macha @GrumpyOldNurse @HebrideanHecate The trouble with that is mental illness is viewed by many as Not Real Illness, so saying there is a MH component is viewed as pejorative by patients, and shoving something off Neuro into Psych has budget implications, it saves them money and they can wash their hands if patients. Why Psych would want them I don't know.Removing that stigma and buck passing is a Mahoosive Task! But after that, yep let's have some joint research!

@FeartnTired @Magnesium @HebrideanHecate @macha the politics that they put on illness, and by extension the patients, fries my socks. How splendid it would be if all health care providers remembered first do no harm. If your policies make patients suffer because of your own biases, you are doing great harm.

@Magnesium I'm borrowing the term sundowners here, haha. My mother takes care of a lot of home bound geriatric patients and many of them with mild dementia become anxious, agitated, and particularly confused after sundown; she and other nursing home medical staff call that "sundowners". I personally suspect my version of "sundowners" is PMDD ( https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/conditions-and-diseases/premenstrual-dysphoric-disorder-pmdd%3famp=true ) because it progressively gets worse until my period and then I feel okay until a week and a half before my period again, although my co-morbidities make a diagnosis less clear (and in any case, anti-depressants are the usual treatment for it, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯).

@Zephyranthes @GrumpyOldNurse That's interesting. Eek I hope I'm not getting early dementia. But perhaps daily hormonal changes relating to light have an effect on a variety of people with different susceptibilities. I would say I have always been a bit 'seasonal affective disorder' and hate that dimming light in winter so maybe it is just an exacerbation of that.

@Magnesium @GrumpyOldNurse SAD sounds like a solid hypothesis to me— last year around this time I got blood work back that said I was Vit. D deficient (and I was able to develop that over a Texas "winter" lol!) and taking supplements really helped with the fatigue I was dealing with then, but Vit. D deficiency can also have an effect on mood.
