Any of y’all spinsters avid campers and hikers? I’ve always wanted to go camping more and work up to going backpacking, but I don’t have anyone to go with regularly. My mother has sort of instilled in me an idea that solo-camping and solo-backpacking is an irresponsible level of risk to take (I’m in my early 20s, so I’m still working on sorting through my own informed judgements and what my anxious mother taught me, so 😅). I know there are satellite phones/gps beacons and such so hikers have a panic button in emergencies and such… Anyway, was just wondering if any of y’all with outdoors expirence have any perspective on solo-woman camping and backpacking.

@Zephyranthes My dad was in the mountain rescue for years and would always recommend this book to know what you’re doing. I don’t know where you’re based, but in Switzerland (for example) the state has made an app for hikers that broadcasts your location in case of emergency (I think it possibly pings the masts regularly and if it stops for more than 48 hours they send out a rescue team - I’d have to check how it works with dad). There are probably other apps like it. You could find buddies or women with experience on Giggle maybe? Also check who local mountain rescue are as they run courses sometimes.
