Any other #ActuallyAutistic people out there feel like they were taught to mask by their parents, under the guise of parenting? They taught me that I was supposed to be the person they wanted me to be, and not the person who I actually am. And I was somehow led to believe that this was correct, and that everyone does this all the time, and that 'being real' was actually rude and inconsiderate. But then all my relationships would fall apart when I stopped masking.

I've had to tell relatives that they can't visit me this summer. So many people think that #Covid is gone now that the WHO declared the emergency over. They're planning to party this summer like it's 2019. And with tracking tools dropping all over, it will be so hard to assess true risk. My household has avoided it thus far, even with all my necessary medical visits, but even healthcare dropped masking. I am despairing. #CovidIsNotOver #WearAMask #ProtectMe

@Geoffberner @freemo The problem with this line of thinking is that heart disease isn’t contagious. I can go to public places like my doctor’s office and sit in the waiting room next to someone who has heart disease with no worries. I can no longer go anywhere, including necessary medical appointments, without worrying about catching something that is the third leading cause of death. And #covid continues to mutate. Not to mention no cure for #LongCovid which now affects millions.

@freemo @Geoffberner From a political point of view, there is a lot that could be done. They could be regulating cleaner air in public buildings, continuing to mandate masks in medical and pharmacy settings, making sure money goes to accelerated research on vaccines and treatments for long covid, making sure tracking data stays online and is reported. They’re not doing this, instead even the Dems in power do nothing and say it’s over.

There was a funeral this week for an elderly family member. I sent my condolences, I knew it would be a large gathering with no #covid protections so I didn't go.Now I am being contacted by elderly relatives who did go and are starting to feel sick.I am so frustrated. They wouldn't listen to me about protections, and now they are scared. I know at least one of them probably had a mask in her pocket, but didn't wear it.I don't want more funerals.#CovidIsNotOver #MaskUp @novid

Anyone else develop hidden methods of autistic stimming due to shaming and ridicule at a young age from family & schoolmates? When I first learned what stimming is, I didn't think I was doing it. But then I tried paying attention to what I do. I rock back and forth which is noticeable but was never commented on. But then I have more hidden things. I wiggle my toes in an alternating pattern, and roll my ankles. I do what my mother has always called "playing with my fingers" which is crossing and uncrossing them in repeating patterns. As a child, I got yelled at for more obvious things, like for a while I would grab my long hair and jump up and down, then after being reprimanded I tried just grabbing my hair and shaking my whole body, and eventually even that got me in trouble. So I tried hiding it and using my toes and fingers.@actuallyautistic #ActuallyAutistic

Ooh I got a request from the cancer hospital that I went to last week to fill out a patient experience survey. I gave them a lot of low scores on their questions about patient safety, and wrote comments about their lack of mask mandate. They are a cancer hospital!! Masks should be required in every medical and pharmacy location at a minimum, but at a very bare minimum it should be required for a cancer hospital!!I gave them my personal information at the end when it asked if they can contact me about my survey. I’m happy to give them all the info they ask for!#CovidIsNotOver #COVIDisAirborne #MaskUpN95 #Covid

Mostly seeing this in financial news, since this caused their shares to go up. I think it’s good news, but have to see if they get approval to sell it as more than just primary series or first booster in the US.“Novavax…today announced that its updated protein-based XBB COVID vaccine candidate induced neutralizing antibody responses to the EG.5.1 and XBB.1.16.6 subvariants in small animal and non-human primate studies.”#Covid #CovidIsNotOver #Novavax @novid https://ir.novavax.com/press-releases/2023-08-22-Novavaxs-Updated-Protein-based-XBB-COVID-Vaccine-Induced-Neutralizing-Responses-Against-Emerging-Subvariants%2C-Including-EG-5-1-and-XBB-1-16-6

I had a good conversation with a friend who recently had Covid again. I asked him why it was hard to hear information on Covid, and why he ignores it and “lives his life”.He said that he knew what it could do to him, especially Long Covid, and he was afraid of it. So he can’t even think about it. He knows that he’s in denial and acting badly, and he got worried about telling people that he had Covid again, that he knew he was projecting feeling badly about ignoring Covid by assuming that he would be shamed for talking about catching it. And that he assumed others would also feel this shame in themselves, so he felt that he shouldn’t talk about it and make them also feel bad.Covid has all this denial and shame wrapped up in it. My friend is very self-aware and could talk about it, but still didn’t feel able to get away from this daily denial to change his behavior. The possibility of a destroyed future life due to Covid bodily damage is too much for him to bear even thinking about, so he goes on with “normal” life because thinking about protecting himself is too much thinking about Covid. Acting in a safe way is a reminder of how unsafe we are. So he doesn’t.I don’t know how to combat this. Masking is a reminder to him of the constant danger he’s in, and of the shame he’s received from others about catching it (both real and imagined). I don’t know how to get through to a society full of people like this, and most who are much less self-aware of their denial.#Covid #CovidIsNotOver #LongCovid #CovidDenial @novid

Husband had to bring in his car to the garage today. The guy started to hassle him about his mask. Husband recalled that when I brought my car to a different place, they had misunderstood me and thought I had Covid, so they kept their distance and worked on my "infected" car with all the windows down, and even did what they could with my car outside. So he told them "well I'm doing this for you guys, I have some symptoms but I don't know what it is." Bingo. They shut up, kept their distance and quickly did what was needed.Everyone is so fearful of Covid, but only a few are willing to actually protect themselves (and their customers or patients!) against it. They choose instead to live in denial and hassle others when they try to protect themselves. I don't get it.#CovidIsNotOver #COVIDisAirborne #Covid #MaskUpN95 @novid
