Anyone else develop hidden methods of autistic stimming due to shaming and ridicule at a young age from family & schoolmates? When I first learned what stimming is, I didn't think I was doing it. But then I tried paying attention to what I do. I rock back and forth which is noticeable but was never commented on. But then I have more hidden things. I wiggle my toes in an alternating pattern, and roll my ankles. I do what my mother has always called "playing with my fingers" which is crossing and uncrossing them in repeating patterns. As a child, I got yelled at for more obvious things, like for a while I would grab my long hair and jump up and down, then after being reprimanded I tried just grabbing my hair and shaking my whole body, and eventually even that got me in trouble. So I tried hiding it and using my toes and fingers.@actuallyautistic #ActuallyAutistic

@VeeRat @actuallyautistic Oh yeah, definitely, I remember I used to cross my fingers together in order of thumb to pinkie, and my family made fun of it so much that I consciously made an effort to not outwardly stim, so I did more subtle things like putting my hands in my pockets and rubbing the keychain on my backpack

@VeeRat @actuallyautistic definitely the same, I thought I wasn't stimming, but actually I do some specific patterns with my fingers on any surfaces, or the same but on musics that I have in mind. I thought I was doing that only when I lied in bed so that "it is not really stimming" , but I started to noticed that I do it ALL THE TIME!
