"Dad, can you 3d print me some little toy soldiers that I can move around the map for my report on the Battle of Austerlitz?""How many do you need?""Well, one side had like 75,000, and they other almost 100,000. If we use your smaller printer for the French, and the big printer for the Coalition can we be done by tomorrow?""How many men will each toy soldier represent?""Just one, I want it to be accurate"

@stux I grew up not far from there. Visited it numerous times for school field trips. Really a fascinating facility

My son is on a field trip at the zoo. I'm hoping the teacher eventually reads her texts and tells him to give himself some insulinFeeling helpless

@kev I once stayed at company exactly long enough to go from password "$ometh1ng1" through "$ometh1ng9" and then "$ometh1ng0"I liked to joke that the reason I was leaving was because I was out of possible password combinations

@thomasfuchs policies like this make Republicans seem like grade school bullies who grew up to not only make bullying acceptable, but requiredLike there's no point to any of this other than to be cruel

@kev the only way to ensure total online privacy is to never go online, or interact with any online servicesEverything else is a compromise, and everyone has different needs that adjust where that compromise line lives.I wish I could be more secure than a typical Android phone, but I need one to run the software that allows me to view the data that comes from my son's continuous glucose monitor, and soon his insulin pumpDo the best you can, where you can, and accept you can't be perfect

GitLab is often where I put my "done" projects; hackathons, game jam games, experiments I never finished etc.I guess I need to pull my code out of there too before GitLab deletes it on mehttps://www.theregister.com/2022/08/04/gitlab_data_retention_policy/

@hankg @newt that's kind of where we are in a bind. MS is pushing GitHub, but hearing from other big companies that on prem GitHub Enterprise is more than a year behind cloud and may be on the way outAtlassian just killed off BitBucket Server and jacked up the price of BB Data Center to push companies to the cloudI run Gitea and Woodpecker at home and would love to scale it to fit our needs, but CIO wants someone to throw money at for support

@Vollmer @hankg @kev What about something like Dillinger? https://dillinger.io/ Yes, you would have to host it somewhere, but seems to work pretty well on mobile

@kev @obsolete29 while I agree static code generated sites are not as simple to initially set up, nor are they as simple to post, they are far more simple to manage the site once they are up and runningNot having to update the language or the database the site uses, not needing to patch vulnerabilities in the software platform or its many plugins all make it require less ongoing maintenanceEvery system has friction. Some systems are per post friction, some are per patch friction

Any suggestions for a medium/low end laptop that can run Linux? I have a desktop I primarily use, so have been using Linux on a Chromebook for what little I do away from the desktop. Just looking for something that would let me continue to tinker with Rust, and do it from my back porch or in a quieter spot when the kids get noisyLooking for something in the $400-$500 range, and don't need discrete graphics or anything fancy

@retroedgetech @chronrevisited I got a refurbished Dell Inspiron for $230 that had Windows 10s on it, and 10s is probably why it was returned. Installed Manjaro and it does exactly what I need and is low power enough that it has great battery life

@kev @Tay0 I used to cut 3.5 acres with a full sized tractor (1949 Ford), and then got a Zero Turn. A lot faster and more fun on the zero turn, but the tractor had lot of other uses, plowing snow out of driveway, hauling dirt around property etc.Now I have 3 acres, but 2.75 of that is woods so I have a small electric push mower
