Maybe I need to start hosting my own SCM system after all. They used to have some nominal price tier which I used to give them some money even though I'm a *very* light individual user. They blew that away though. So now I'm a free user again. Many of my projects haven't been touched in a year but they are stored there. This pisses me off a lot. (H/T @TomLarrow for bringing this to my attention)https://www.theregister.com/2022/08/04/gitlab_data_retention_policy/

@hankg @TomLarrow This is plain destructive. Sure, there may be a lot of test/ hobby projects lying around untouched, but they can just compact it down and away in some bulk, archival system for things that haven't been touched in a year.

@hankg @TomLarrow gitlab changed their minds. Now they’ll only archive inactive projects to a slower storage. But, I mean, I didn’t exactly expect anyone to host my stuff for free indefinitely either :comfyshrug:

@newt @hankg as someone looking to make a multi millon dollar purchase of a source code management system and a CI for my company in the next 18 months as Microsoft winds down Azure DevOps this gives me pause. If GitLab is so desperate for money that they even considered deleting all that code I have to wonder if it worth the multi year effort to move 12,000 developers and rebuild hundreds of pipelines to GitLab would be worth itWill they still be solvent in 5 years?

@TomLarrow @hankg i guess, their business model isn't hosting but selling software itself to run on your servers. Gitlab.com is more of a testbench and an evaluation copy of Gitlab for potential customers. Unlike GitHub, they don't seem to monetize their unpaying users, therefore it makes less sense to spend money on hosting their stuff.

@hankg @TomLarrow i have tried both for me and my friends, since we aren't particularly into Github.Gitea is superiour for several reasons.* It's a lot easier to administrate, it has a nice CLI tool, for example.* Gitea is a lot lighter on resources. Out of the box, it consumes only a few dozen megabytes of RAM. Gitlab, on the other hand, requires at least two gigabytes or so.* Some features that are only available in paid version of Gitlab, in Gitea are free to use. Mirroring for example is limited in Gitlab CE and you need to purchase a license to use it fully.Overall, Gitea seems much more pleasant to use.

@newt Yeah with this latest kerfuffle I've been looking at it a bunch for a self-hosted option. I guess I could maybe try Codeberg or something instead. Back when I chose GitLab it's only real self-hosted competitor was the Atlassian Suite and its Rube Goldberg/house of cards installation and maintenance system. For a small instance on one system it was far more svelte and easy to administer.

@hankg @TomLarrow Codeberg is Gitea :comfyderp:Gitlab's problems mostly stem from that it's implemented in Ruby. And we all know how much Ruby sucks.

@TomLarrow What are the other self-hosted options that would be better? Stacked up against their competitors GitLab was an easy choice when I had to make that decision many years ago. Perhaps Gitea + a CI system would be better if there are concerns about GitLab's open core foundations not being enough if they project tanked.

@hankg @newt that's kind of where we are in a bind. MS is pushing GitHub, but hearing from other big companies that on prem GitHub Enterprise is more than a year behind cloud and may be on the way outAtlassian just killed off BitBucket Server and jacked up the price of BB Data Center to push companies to the cloudI run Gitea and Woodpecker at home and would love to scale it to fit our needs, but CIO wants someone to throw money at for support

@TomLarrow @hankg my previous employer had Bitbucket Server and it sucked, switching to Gitlab was a bliss. My current employer uses Github and I can't say their paid support is any good. It honestly just makes sense to run your own Gitlab or Gitea instance and maybe have your devops or sysadmin look at it once in a while. These things are low maintenance, so it's not a big deal.

Right I meant use Codeberg (or one of the other hosted Gitea options) as a Gitea transition instead of self-hosting Gitea.
