@matthannon do bear in mind they’re a bad idea (TRVs in general with the exception of bedrooms) with an Air to Water #A2W based (i.e. radiator/UFH based) #HeatPump so shouldn’t be used, nor pushed. An open circuit that doesn’t restrict flow is very very important to get the efficiency levels they’re rated & good for.Take a look at #HeatGeek (Adam Chapman) @petereastern , @kenbone , @stevewebster56 , Nathan Van Gambling for references to this

@matthannon @petereastern @kenbone @stevewebster56 I had the Honeywell EvoHome smart radiator setup on all radiators prior to this summer when I got my Daikin #HeatPump installed by Octopus 🐙 Energy. They also agree with the no TRV (or set all to max) approach & instead balance the radiators and UFH. All controls (incl. smart TRVs) are now gone, with the system running brilliantly efficiently on pure weather compensation control only.

@matthannon @petereastern @kenbone @stevewebster56 I wouldn’t personally. The technical “why” is that you need a minimum amount of water & emitters (radiators, UFH) in the system (ie the TRV hasn’t turned off!) that matches the minimum modulation heat output (Watts) of the heat source (gas or #HeatPump )Not doing this leads 2 “short cycling” where the unit hasn’t got anywhere to send the heat so turns off, yet thermostat says it needs heat….

@matthannon @petereastern @kenbone @stevewebster56 have you considered doing an episode for #LocalZeroPod to aid people with best practices for #HeatPump ?I see you’ve had Nathan van Gambling and Adam Chapman on before, but would be worth having even a segment on this.Remember: #HeatPump efficiency (from being able to lower flow temperature from say installing more or bigger radiators) is equivalent of other energy saving measures. Subtle.

@matthannon @petereastern @kenbone @stevewebster56 The other thing worth mentioning is that the tado (or other makes) control won’t be able to effectively or efficiently control a #HeatPump itself. They send on/off signals to the heat pump which are terrible for efficiency (but will work with higher running costs)Best to remove/not install 3rd party control/thermostats with #HeatPumpStick to the supplied manufacturer controls basically!

@matthannon @petereastern @kenbone @stevewebster56 I found one of the really good field trial (Ireland, so very close match to our climate) reports that @paulkenny was involved in and I read a few times to digest. https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Seamus-Hoyne/publication/340849413_Superhomes_20_Best_Practice_Guide_for_ASHP_Retrofit/links/5ea09ecf299bf143893ff09b/Superhomes-20-Best-Practice-Guide-for-ASHP-Retrofit.pdf?origin=publication_detailWorth a look, and again this also covers TRVs amongst other great best practice and conclusions. Hope the share is useful to others.

@matthannon Hi Matt, are you aware that the latest localzero pod (episode 2) seems to be a duplicate of the previous pod (episode 1). Unless I’m going mad of course!Checked On Apple Podcasts and PodFollow FYI.

@matthannon great podcast episode again. Reminded me of Dr Steve Fawkes on the Edifice Complex podcast (or via YouTube) episode 30. Worth a watch/listen as it seems complementary. https://edificecomplexpodcast.com/episodes/030-dr-steven-fawkes-finance-energy-efficiency/https://youtu.be/hIK1kcomNhU

@matthannon we should also have been pushing much harder for *energy* reduction in homes:1. Allow/push hard "Air2Air" mini-split (Aircon) #HeatPump as most of rest of world & business/commercial UK properties already use!) Why this not part of the solution toolkit is beyond me. My dad did this in Sep'22 2. Push the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (Air2Water #HeatPump) much harder, & remove most of the bureaucracy 3. Bring forward to ~2024/25 no new gas boilers deadline per other European countries

@matthannon not just you either, this makes for sobering reading:https://www.fleetnews.co.uk/news/car-industry-news/2023/02/16/rail-strikes-three-quarters-make-switch-from-rail-to-carA real shame - it's the opposite that needs to happen.

The #BoilerUpgradeScheme (England and Wales) that is in place to help households with the system transition costs of moving to an Air to Water #HeatPump (from gas or oil) has not used anywhere near its budget this year, and funds remaining this financial year are to be clawed back from U.K. Treasury!!!Absolutely bonkers. @janrosenow @mliebreich @matthannon https://utilityweek.co.uk/unspent-boiler-upgrade-money-will-be-lost-minister-admits/

@matthannon we may have found a Brexit benefit...😜 Seriously however, if you look at the auto manufacturer's strategies for the transition to EV's, overwhelmingly, they're investing many many £$billions now and the past few years, and therefore are going to make the switch to EV only manufacturing by late this decade or at least 2030 anyway, so you could argue the EU law is moot. They know if they don't, Chinese auto manufacturers and Tesla will clean up. It's an existential threat.

@ChrisMayLA6 Very good. Similar #GroundSource #HeatPump based #HeatNetwork happened near to me in Swaffham Prior, Cambridgeshire:https://www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/residents/climate-change-energy-and-environment/climate-change-action/low-carbon-energy/community-heating/swaffham-prior-heat-network@matthannon - a couple of projects that maybe of interest for #LocalZeroPod

@matthannon it’s frustrating isn’t it. What should the (next) government do? We’re driving (#EV via electric Eurotunnel LeShuttle) with our little boys to mid France 🇫🇷 this summer, & when looking, I remember flight prices to places like Spain 🇪🇸 and Portugal 🇵🇹 during school holidays were already astronomically high. You’d think that would be enough, but I’m not sure price is a big a problem for lots of people, thereby increasing the need for other measures.

@matthannon indeed. I guess they could be forced to “score” holiday packages a bit like the food labelling system?Or go further and provide detailed CO2e Big buildout of high speed electric rail (decades) and EV based bus networks (buses are more modular, scalable) is needed amongst other things too with a push towards these. The scale of flights I suspect dwarfs what the other methods can accommodate in the short and medium term though. Is there any analysis on this?

@matthannon it is an incredible series. I was actually quite surprised how little I knew (compared to what I thought I knew!) about Earths history Really laid out how unique we are, and low probability that we are here at all.Of course universe wide, in space time scale context, it is arguable that life itself could be statistically probable.
