The world needs fewer "scientists" and more people willing to collect data, ask hard questions, and think critically about the answers they get.

@alex I am unsurprised. Threads is both corporate and woke. The more free end of the fediverse is like kryptonite to a corporation that likes censorship and needs to stay brand safe to mollify advertisers.I am also unconcerned. Before Threads, we had a vibrant and active community. After Threads, nothing has changed.> Why aren't journos writing about this?Do you seriously have to ask?

@Boo_BuryMothman I haven't looked at the spec lately. Is VTS implemented as part of the chapters file?If so, then yeah, that's the natural fit.

@Boo_BuryMothman Hmmm.. It's easy enough to use the same interface to emit a value block you could paste in, but I've stayed away from editing the RSS. Too easy to screw up the feed; not to mention the Microsoft technologies make it 5x harder than it needs to be because their xml tools all insist on doing full w3c validation at every step.Seems like that'd be a natural fit for the chapters file.

The public goal of every labor union is anticompetitive price fixing in the economic market for human labor. They are anathema to free trade. The unstated but aggressively sought goal of most labor unions is raw political and ideological activism, without regard to the desires or benefit of the members whose hard work is being exploited to push that agenda.I will never willingly join a union.

@wjmaggos Free trade. In an ideal world, if you're good at your job and not being treated well, then you leave and get a different job. The easier it is to get rid of underperformers, the less risk mgmt takes on by extending a job offer, and the easier it is to get a new job.See places like Europe, where it's nearly impossible to fire someone, and also unreasonably difficult to get a job. Same with unionized vs non-unionized shops in my industry.

@wjmaggos Of course, we're not in an ideal world; people are taught they are entitled to keep their current job. Changing jobs is met with fear and anxiety, and people will fight tooth and nail to stay in a bad job rather than try to find a better one.

You have exactly as much right to be proud of your heritage as you have to be ashamed of it. Which is to say, none at all.You had no part in creating it, and therefore can be neither blamed nor praised for the result.

@progo I've been bitching about the phenomenon for over a decade. But I didn't have a catchy word for it, so props to Doctorow for that.

Sometimes, after unsuccessfully trying over and over to understand a particularly difficult concept, the only logical conclusion is not that you're too dumb to get it, but rather that the person trying to explain the concept doesn't get it either.Apropos of nothing, I'm reading yet another article on how quantum will change computing as we know it.
