The public goal of every labor union is anticompetitive price fixing in the economic market for human labor. They are anathema to free trade.The unstated but aggressively sought goal of most labor unions is raw political and ideological activism, without regard to the desires or benefit of the members whose hard work is being exploited to push that agenda.I will never willingly join a union.

@SirBemrose lots to talk about here. labor is a cost and as a consumer, everybody wants those lower (except for themselves). the ways that pressure can be brought down on workers is endless. what should be allowed to help offset that?

@wjmaggos Free trade.In an ideal world, if you're good at your job and not being treated well, then you leave and get a different job. The easier it is to get rid of underperformers, the less risk mgmt takes on by extending a job offer, and the easier it is to get a new job.See places like Europe, where it's nearly impossible to fire someone, and also unreasonably difficult to get a job. Same with unionized vs non-unionized shops in my industry.

@wjmaggos Of course, we're not in an ideal world; people are taught they are entitled to keep their current job. Changing jobs is met with fear and anxiety, and people will fight tooth and nail to stay in a bad job rather than try to find a better one.

@SirBemrose @wjmaggos I’ve had a union card since 2012. Of those 11 years, there was three I did not work any union calls. Can’t work if you can’t show your papers. Really groundbreaking for the people type of shit.

@SirBemrose unions are best in the private sector when they help workers bargain against bosses. I can agree with lots of your complaints about unions going beyond this role (or how things get distorted with unions in the public sector). markets ceasing to work well. but businesses get involved beyond just providing a service/product too. and what you say about people being taught they're entitled to a job, there's a ton of false propaganda about how markets will solve everything too.

@SirBemrose Back in the 1700's and early 1800's they were brought to court many times for their threatening and violence.It wasn't until it becme a vote-getter that laws were written protecting Unions and their uncompetitive, threatening and violent practices. They are seldom called to pay for their violence and damage.
