@ParadeGrotesque Iâve sent the raccoon cartoon to almost everyone I know this evening. Itâs like my rule: I have a headache for no reason⊠Drink water, youâre dehydrated.

@slashdot Reading the slashdot comments I had a tremendous feeling of Deja vu. People in 2005 (the last time I was logged into Slashdot) never read the article either.

@futurebird Same re: Facebook. My favorite part of Mastodon is I get total control of what I see in my feed. On Twitter Iâd unfollow somebody and Iâd still see all their posts anyway because âSo-and-so likedâŠâ or âYou might likeâŠâNow I have comic books and bird pictures. Life is good.

@futurebird @ramsey When I took a new job, I started carrying a small notebook (think Field Notes) where I wrote down names, companies, anything useful as soon as I could. I also included memory joggers like âthis guy looks like Sealâ or âTall woman with purple glasses.â When I was in a conference meeting, Iâd draw a table and write down the names of all the people at it. The more you get used to capturing data to help your memory, the better your memory gets.

@WeirdXmas @futurebird I think anyone who gets an A in symbolic logic should immediately be taught regular expressions. Or SQL. Because the brain is the same.

@futurebird My grandmother (who was born in 1909) was the most understanding caring person, but you wouldnât know it to look at her. She was the one her brother in law came out to (in the late 1940s). Which was a big deal, because he was part of a big Irish Catholic family. I remember seeing a Donahue episode in 1991 with her about âinfantilism.â She understood it perfectly and didnât react with scorn. There has always been empathy and kindness.

@futurebird @3PlayerPolitics I thought âConsider Phlebasâ was such a railroad plot that when it moved to an actual railroad, I thought Banks was letting me in on the joke.

@futurebird @aehdeschaine @bri_seven Related: I did a checklist of Shakespeare plays to see how many I saw. (Not a lot, mostly because I havenât really got into the Henriad.)When I got to the comedies I had to look up synopses because I couldnât remember the plays by title. As you like it? All well that ends well? I had no idea, AND I WAS IN ONE OF THOSE PLAYS!!I think a generic title is worse than a bad one. That, and I might be getting memory problems.

@futurebird I really like following you because you always bring up interesting ideas. Itâs not -just- ants. đ Shorthand, braille, and Morse code are all recent attempts to create a novel writing system based on existing written language. My favorite weird example is dance notation. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dance_notationAnd the parallel discovery of written language in different places on the globe show that itâs not a one time thing.

@futurebird I think stressing that âyouâre responsible for what you turn in. If you turn in junk, itâs your fault.â Too many people think âAI/the algorithm absolves me from responsibility.â Thatâs the opposite of what should happen. If you use an algorithm that kills somebody, you should be tried for murder. Yes, I think that should apply to corporations too. Criminally negligence should result in criminal charges.

@futurebird @resuna @Anke @wmd I would start with Fortnight and Minecraft. Thatâs what middle schoolers care about. Or even Insta or Snapchat. Or text messages. They live in a networked world. It shouldnât be hard to explain the concept with the tools they use.

@resuna @futurebird @Anke @wmd Sure, but nobody learns TCP/IP in a vacuum. They need to know the why and how before they learn networking basics.
