It's tempting to say "oh NOW you decide to leave!" to those leaving X But... I'm still happy they are doing it. I wish there were more. I wish more would jump to the fedi, not just another private service like bluesky or threads. It *is* possible to make a choice that gets you out. I left facebook in 2016 after the election. That feeling of being manipulated, messed with, used, and redirected was so viscerally disgusting. Welcome to the rest of the internet one and all. I'm here to help.

@futurebird It took me a while to leave and I can see why people with lots of followers would be reticent. I left FB in 2011 and that was much easier.https://jarche.com/2024/11/farewell-little-bird/

@futurebird I do think without advertising it's a tough sell to get people to move to the Fedi. It would be cool if some mega blockbuster movie or superstar promoted. Dolly, Beyonce, or Taylor could make a huge impact.

@philip_cardella It's not a bad idea but we are so innocent and naive I feel sometimes. I don't know if we can count on big ones coming so save anything (though the big people with clout are welcome and wanted!)The next big thing is a lot of little things. The next big thing is a lot of little things. The next big thing is A LOT of little things.

@futurebird a political theorist named Benjamin Barber spent the last decade arguing for putting power in relatively little things: mayors. I have several of his books but haven't taken the time to read them yet. I'm not sure if it's a good argument or not. I did like his An Aristocracy of Everyone book but that was early nineties when I read it.

@futurebird I'm getting really frustrated. People are by default SO lazy and short-sited, failing to see the rot that's already going on at Bluesky, or that Theads is just the conjoined twin of the comletely enshitified Facebook. "But that's where all the people are!" "Mastodon is HARD! You have to DO stuff to connect with other people! Ick!" Climbing out of the flaming ship into a lifeboat with multiple leaks when there are other options out here.

@futurebird I'm losing patience with all the people who waited until this long after the site became openly nazi and then participated in actively working to undermine the safety and democracy of this entire country. At this point all the people who waited until now helped keep the platform floating when it needed it most. At this point even if it dies, the majority of the damage it was bought to cause has been done.Feels a bit like rats leaving a sinking ship *after* it hit the iceberg.

@futurebird I think your logic has some merit and I am guilty of saying “oh NOW…” to new comers announcing they have just arrived from #X.Perhaps I should have instead asked, what was it that made you decide not to leave X until now, that has suddenly changed? The ethical issues with continuing on X are not new, they haven’t even escalated that much (from a lot bad to more mad) in the last year or so.I am perhaps a little sensitive about it because I left soon after #Musc acquired #Twitter, and I gave up a substantial amount of interaction that I both enjoyed socially and valued in my work. I still miss much of it today.I know a lot of good people who stayed, that did so because they had built an asset that they were reluctant, or felt unable to leave behind. I don’t know where they are in terms of social media today but I wonder how they feel.I am neither angry with people arriving today, nor wishing to congratulate them for their delayed response to what will surely go down in history as one of the great plagues of ‘civilization’.I will continue to welcome and engage with new people that arrive here with simple grace, not so much those that arrive with what appears to be a sense of entitled triumph.

@futurebird I feel the same. I'd like to say that it's all too late, Musk already got what he wanted with the platform by getting Trump elected. Even the paid 44 billion is peanuts compared to stock increases after the election and future government contracts he's able get to his companies. But yes, better late than never.

I think I will sign off now though and start on #bluesky. I much prefer Mastodon, but there is still some pretty important stuff which isn't here unfortunately.

@Outpatientzero A lot of people thought that by staying on X they were “fighting the misinformation” and there are even a few who say if we had not left, if we had stayed to help them things might be different. I can’t say they are wrong with any confidence. But, I think what too few fail to recognize is the tremendous power wielded by *owning the platform* and thus setting the rules. I could have stayed and “fought” but who would have even heard me?

@futurebird Well said. Them leaving today is much better than them leaving tomorrow and infinitely better than not leaving at all. Preferably to Fedi, as you say, but even if it takes them to places that may later degenerate like Bluesky it remains prefearable to X.

@futurebird I left Twitter when Musk took over, but I only actually deleted my account the other day. I'm currently treating my Facebook account the way I treated my Twitter account for the last few years (I'm checking a little, but not contributing other than to tell people to come here). The election wasn't even the last straw for FB, but their terrible moderation (or lack thereof) finally got to me.

@futurebird Same re: Facebook. My favorite part of Mastodon is I get total control of what I see in my feed. On Twitter I’d unfollow somebody and I’d still see all their posts anyway because “So-and-so liked…” or “You might like…”Now I have comic books and bird pictures. Life is good.

@futurebird @Outpatientzero I left after I was suspended twice for outspoken leftism. My engagement plummeted to nothing, except I was overrun by thousands of hooker-bots. I didn't quit. I was bounced. I tried Gab, thinking surely I'll have "absolute free speech" there. Yet, amidst all the horrible Nazis, I found myself behind a paywall after a couple of months of correcting fake Christian fascists. Mastodon has been the free-est free speech platform for me.

@futurebird @Outpatientzero Personally I'm convinced that a mass exodus with statements that Musk was trying to use X to manipulate the election and they wanted no part of that would have done *ORDERS OF MAGNITUDE* more towards mitigating the issues than quietly staying and shouting into the algorithmically driven void. (That last part is key. Most of their attempts to manage misinformation were redirected to those who didn't need it... By design...)

@futurebird It sucks that people are still choosing the private platforms because it's 'more convenient' to use. The fediverse may seem complicated to many people because there are many servers and the way you use an account or operate a server. Most people ain't very knowledgeable in tech unfortunately.
