@lightweight If we somehow figure out how to ameliorate those feelings we will be the first generation in recorded history to do so. Which is another thing you'd think the older generation would take into account - i.e. that their feelings of displacement are hardly unprecedented but rather more or less inevitable, and therefore not the barrel of some inscrutable gun aimed at them and their morals, principles or beliefs.God give me the strength to always keep that in mind myself!

@strypey Todd Muller realised he was out of his depth and it was killing him, and stood back before it did. Got to respect that.

@strypey Yeah I was talking to my wife about that this morning after the RNZ alert about Luxon's $40M star concert scheme announcement. Mayor Brown must be pounding his head on the desk this morning being declined the ability to levy a small bed tax that would have generated about that much money to fund major events just for Auckland alone.Localism wherever the locals agree with Luxon. Centralism wherever they don't.

@judy2k @martiell Two nuns are driving through Transylvania when Dracula appears on the bonnet and starts trying to smash the windscreen."Quick!" yells the nun driving. "Show him your cross! Show him your cross!"The other nun rolled down her window, leaned out, and screamed "Get off my fucking car you vampire bastard!"

@billbennett If anything it has gotten worse, with government following the trend to throw all our data onto cloud services will assure your data is sovereign but 3 minutes of googling will confirm will actually turn everything over to the US government without a second thought. And the US is NOT our friend.

“One gentailer CEO said, you couldn’t run an aeronautical operation the way we were running the power system… We do not have the security around electricity supply that we should have.”If only he knew someone who could have done something about that. #nzpol https://newsroom.co.nz/2025/10/24/smallest-company-looks-to-build-biggest-dammed-hydro-lake-nz-has-seen/

But Energy Minister Simon Watts tells Newsroom they haven’t rejected Lake Onslow out of hand; they’d be open to a fast-track application from the Lake Onslow consortium. “The fast-track legislation was put in place to help enable large scale infrastructure projects.”Bullshit. You shut down the feasibility study after most of the (small amount of) money had already been spent but before they could report back.Party of best economic management my arse, morons.

@strypey Counterpoint: they can already track you using cameras all over the place or the phone in your pocket if they want to. So if you want to opt out of digital RUCs then that's fine, but you will need to pay increased transaction fees to cover running that service for a tiny handful of people - because I'm sure as shit sick of paying an extra $12 a pop on top of the actual tax in order for them to print out another unnecessary polluting piece of plastic.

@strypey "The principles of socialism as we've heard so many times before is, the trouble with it is, you eventually run out of other people's money."Well, the trouble with neoliberalism is, you eventually run out of public assets to sell.... Of course to the neoliberals, that's the point.

@strypey Or, possibly, motorsport would do what it has done for more or less the last century: pioneer a brand new technology and have it in production cars 5 years later. Maybe we *can* have solid-state batteries after all.

@strypey The no confidence option is inherent in any secret ballot system. I may be compelled to take my ballot papers to the booth, and then put them in the box, but nobody gets to see what I do with them in the booth. It is thus always still possible for me to mark them with the classic no confidence dick-and-balls before putting them in the box.But that's not really the point. The point is to get people who just can't be arsed off the couch. Most of them will then go ahead and vote. Those who *truly object* to every single choice are free to dick and balls it as they like.

@lightweight @davemosk Totally. I 100% believe they DO have end to end encryption. But they own the ends, so they can have their cake and eat it too.
