It occurs to me that the wellspring of malcontent that NZF and ACT are tapping into with their demonisation of their 'woke' strawman is the sense of displacement & discomfort many of the older generation feel - like Aotearoa is increasingly not the sort of place they remember growing up in, where they knew their where they stood. Their anger with tangata whenua's waxing cultural representation & immigrants from non-European cultures is fascinating for its irony. 1/2

They don't seem to have an informed perspective. They fail to acknowledge the displacement Māori would have felt as British & Europeans descended on their lands like locusts, displacing them & everything they knew... but not nearly as benevolently & peacefully as things are changing now. You'd think this older cohort would have some sympathy and grace. Some do, many don't. Ignorance & entitlement are, as ever, our real enemy. 2/2

@lightweight If we somehow figure out how to ameliorate those feelings we will be the first generation in recorded history to do so. Which is another thing you'd think the older generation would take into account - i.e. that their feelings of displacement are hardly unprecedented but rather more or less inevitable, and therefore not the barrel of some inscrutable gun aimed at them and their morals, principles or beliefs.God give me the strength to always keep that in mind myself!

@lightweight There's a further dimension to it, which is that they - or their ancestors - moved to New Zealand to escape from, or as displaced victims of, the Scotland Highland Clearances (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Highland_Clearances) or through the New Zealand Company, which was set up to deceitfully "trade" land off Māori based on false assurances (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Zealand_Company).

@paw good point. So doubly ironic.

@Styler yes, I think it's folks in their 60s-70s now - although some of the even older set are pretty pro-colonical & racist, too. They are - if the anecdotal behaviour I see in my immediate neighbourhood is any indication - the core of the NewsTalkZB audience and have bought into the anti-woke, anti-cycling, anti-academic, anti-EV culture wars completely. There's a whole lot of ignorance floating around there, too.
