Please stop screenshotting your Twitter posts and crossposting them to Fedi, especially without alt text. :drgn_sigh: Just copy and paste the text, it's not that hard.#Fedi #FediMeta #Mastodon #MastoMeta #Accessibility

As much as I like that computers have gotten a lot more accessible to people, I still wish that people on the whole had gotten more computer literate and tech savvy instead of computing becoming what it is now. Computers making things easier for users often comes with vendor lock-in and things "that just work" all only just working because they're from the same manufacturer. Also people seem pretty incapable of learning new tech and different workflows now which is... frustrating. We used to use raw HTML on our MySpace pages. :blobfoxdizzy:

I feel like every operating system has at least one massive compromise that makes me not like using it.iOS is the locked down nature of the OS and the walled garden App Store.Android is the back button/gesture and, somewhat relatedly, the way that apps are "apps of apps" that makes it so apps have multiple entry points where you can't navigate back up to the home screen of an app without closing it and reentering it in some cases.Windows is... *gestures vaguely to all of it*macOS's menu bar drives me absolutely bonkers and makes it really hard to find anything since it's impossible to tell if it's in the toolbar or only in the menubar that could easily be on the other side of the screen from where your app window is.All except Linux. The only deal breaker with it is that developers don't develop for it, which isn't really a fault of the OS. :blobfoxfloofhappy: #Linux #FOSS #Windows #Mac #macOS #Android #iOS #iPhone

If any Mastodon admins are dealing with spam account sign-ups, it's worth noting that these accounts seem to universally use disposable email providers and burner email address. There's a GitHub repo that tracks these providers. All moderation inquiries are sent to a user's email on Mastodon, so there's no legitimate reason any Mastodon user should be using a disposable email address. As such, there's a git repository that tracks these disposable email providers. There are also bash scripts that will import the repository into tootctl for you.The disposable email git repo can be found here:Disposable Email DomainsAnd the bash scripts can be found here:DockerRegular/Not DockerSimply clone the repo and copy the bash script onto your server, then edit the script to point at your Mastodon installation and the directory you cloned the repository to, and it should handle the rest.Side note: I checked our logs and we had a huge spike in attempted sign-ups from a bunch of different disposable email addresses this week, so I can confirm that blocking them definitely works.#Mastodon #MastoMeta #MastodonAdmin #MastoAdmin #Spam #Spamwave

Okay, I've been using both Mastodon and BlueSky a lot of the last couple of days and I have some thoughts. :blobfoxthinkanime: There are features on each platform that both could benefit from.Things ActivityPub/Mastodon should steal from BlueSky:Shareable lists with a bulk account follow button. It seems like a great way to increase discoverability without the overhead of running an algorithmic feed.DIDs. Decentralized identification could be really nice. It sucks when your server goes down or you have a bad admin that suspends you and now you have to change your links everywhere.Quote boosts. I know they're open to abuse, but BlueSky lets you uncouple your post from a quote if it's used maliciously which is a great heckin' approach.Image editing. A lot of Mastodon apps support it, but it'd be nice if the web interface had a basic crop tool.Things BlueSky should steal from Mastodon:Content Warnings. Having a generic "Adult Content" or "Sexually Suggestive" banner does a really bad job of telling you what's in the post. CWs are more useful too since they can be used as spoiler tags.Post privacy controls. Being able to set your posts to followers only, unlisted, or mentioned people only is invaluable.Follower approvals. On Mastodon you can leave your account public but pick who gets to follow you, which is really useful so you don't have to keep everything private while also being able to curate your audience.Custom emojis. The distinct lack of blobfox's is appalling. :blobfoxsipglare:Bigger character limit. 300 characters is ridiculously small. Obviously CubHub's 100k character limit is stupidly big, but even, like, 500 characters would be nice.Threaded replies. If you're going to have a character limit, at least let me add multiple posts to the thread before I hit the post button. (I think this is Glitch only, and it's actually removed on CubHub because of the aforementioned massive character limit, but still :3c)Markdown/rich text editing. I know it's another Glitch feature but it's nice~The drawing utility. Even more Glitch stuff, but it feels like Miiverse and I like it. :blobfoxinnocentcute:Emoji reactions. Getting real specific here because that's not even a Mastodon feature, it's a Ruffy feature, but it's nice. :meowpout:Polls, although I feel like that's probably going to come at some point.Editing posts. Again, I think it's probably coming, but it's sorely missed.Bookmarking posts. I lose stuff way too often ;;;Can anyone think of anything I'm forgetting? :blobfoxthinkgoogly: Also I know a lot of these are unrealistic, especially DIDs in ActivityPub, but it's still fun to think about.

yes yes yes YES :ablobfoxbongohyper: Trying to get BlueSky users to opt into the bridge has thus far been a nightmare, and BlueSky's privacy model is basically "there is no privacy, firehose everyone's posts at everything :evil_colon_three: " anyway.I'm still not the biggest fan of the Fediverse side being opt-in either since mirroring your content to different servers is literally how ActivityPub works and federating with new servers has always been an opt-out affair, not an opt-in one, but whatever. :blobfoxsipsmug: I've ranted about that enough and Fediverse users would tantrum.#BlueSky #BlueSkyBridge #Bridgyfed

Me: Please don't use Chromium-based browsers, use Firefox instead. Google has way too much control over the web because of Chromium and they'll be sure to leverage that in order to benefit themselves.Chromium: Hey all, we're getting rid of ad-blockers because it's cutting into our record-breaking revenue! I mean, uh, we're deprecating Manifest V2 for, uh, security. Yeah.Me: See? Please use Firefox. :blobfoxmeltsob:Mozilla: Hey friends, AI is really cool! *steps on rake* Hey friends, we're making an ads business! *steps on rake* Hey friends, we have a ToS with either the most nefarious or the most incompetent language ever! *steps on rake* Also AI is cool!!!Me: ... :corgi_wtf1: I hate it here.#Mozilla #Firefox #Google #Chrome #Chromium #FOSS

Mind you, this still isn't a good excuse to use a Chromium-based browser. And for all you people using Brave out there, well :corgi_wtf1: 🖕 Brave is run by this guy who hates queer people and believes conspiracy theories about Covid, so maybe don't use his shitty browser that's been caught injecting affiliate links. #Brave #BraveBrowser #Mozilla #Firefox #Google #Chrome #Chromium #FOSS

@m0xEE @matthew That's going to become a security nightmare really quickly. Just use a fork that flips off any new invasive features by default, like Floorp, LibreWolf, IceWeasel, etc. :wolf_peek:

Why Mastodon is better than Bluesky or Twitter summed up in one sentence:Charlie Kirk was a piece of shit Nazi loser who can rest in piss and Trump really should've been guillotined by now.

Trump getting Jimmy Kimmel cancelled using the FCC while attempting to declare any antifascist action as terrorism is terrifying, yet we can't openly talk about these people as the Nazi scum they are because these social media platforms are more interested in protecting their bottom lines than protecting democracy.
