Sums up how I've been feeling about the browser situation. #firefoxRT: https://cubhub.social/users/Rusty/statuses/114117298937145470

I've downgraded Firefox to 115esr on all of my machines and put firefox package on hodl — I hope someone steps up backporting security fixes to that, I certainly don't any new features.CC: @Rusty@cubhub.social

@m0xEE @matthew That's going to become a security nightmare really quickly. Just use a fork that flips off any new invasive features by default, like Floorp, LibreWolf, IceWeasel, etc. :wolf_peek:

I am very "idiosyncratic" when it comes to Web and at times want something even forks don't do, e.g. I really hate WebP — for real, I don't want my Firefox to be capable of decoding this stuff. There used to be an about:config pref to disable it, but they have removed it circa 118 — I tried playing the catchup by patching the pref to disable it back into newer versions of Firefox, but building it for all the platforms, fixing build issues — is a tiresome process and eventually I've given up and just stopped updating.I think security threats are way overblown if you keep scripts and stuff like WebAssembly disabled by default — and only whitelist it on the websites where you know you need it (or in case with WASM use a separate profile just for that website/web app).Besides, latest patch level of 115esr is only a month or so old, so I still have some time. Otherwise I think the Web is fucked as a whole — we, the community have dropped the ball here and have completely lost control over it — Google, on the contrary, has near-complete control over Web-technologies, we can only play the catchup game maybe for a couple more years, sooner or later they'd find a way to force all this stuff upon us.We have lost, the best we can do is minimise our reliance on Web-technologies — switch back to desktop applications where possible, things like that. At least that's what I do.CC: @matthew@social.retroedge.tech
