@futurebird "It's not going to be on the test, and I am scored only on how many of you pass the test." (learning is just a box-ticking exercise)

@futurebird I watch YouTube channels mostly by RSS feed: the video gets announced, I download it with Naughty Software (tm), and later I watch it. That's what I did with TV back last century when I had a TV. If I couldn't do that, I wouldn't be watching at all.

@futurebird Most people don't want to do politics. They want the world to go on more or less as it has been, while other people look after that stuff most of the time.Anarchists (of whom I am one spiritually), advocates of putting every question to a public vote, etc., tend to rely on everyone being interested in doing politics all the time. They are and all their friends are, so…

@futurebird A crowd roar is fine, distinguishable words (like announcements) drop me right out. Ditto programming.

@futurebird I have had to teach myself to say "you know, you have a good point, thank you". Nothing in my upbringing encouraged backing down, even the appearance of backing down, even when there's nothing to be gained by staying in.

@futurebird One example: radiotherapy for cancer can kill off gut flora—which leads to diarrhoea as many things aren't getting digested. The usual advice back in the day was to eat live dairy products like yoghurt.

@futurebird @Naich I don't see any great problem for my own use. But "when someone says they're the victim of abuse, default to believing them"—when other people say it has been a huge problem for them elsewhere and they're glad it isn't here, I take them seriously.

@futurebird They spend the money on "good works" a long way away where you can't see it, like getting homosexuality criminalised in Uganda. (And on themselves of course.)

@futurebird To put it another way: causing people to be distracted by things that don't turn out votes is a tactic.

@futurebird When I was a medical student in 1989-1990 we were taught that skeletons could be reliably identified as male or female (mostly based on the shape of the pelvis). Even then it only applied to white Europeans, and now it's accepted that it's so inaccurate even with them that it's not something you could ever rely on.
