There is a very good chance that Russia may block YouTube, in the US there is talk of blocking Ticktock, China blocks all kinds of internet services. The internet is supposed to be global, an international collaborative network. Increasingly it grows fractured and ordinary people sign up for VPNs alongside their cable and water bills. What if we had some diplomacy over these issues? Everyone keeps acting like the internet is "new" -- it's not. It's as old as I am and I'm an old lady.

@futurebird The Russian govt. has flat out said that it will entirely block YouTube soon, followed by Android and iOS.

@scobiform I don't care as much about who is first I do not like this trend of each country trying to put their people in a little fire-walled playpen like babies.

@futurebird They've got to update their OS' somehow... and there are features in the OS that are very much tied to accessing Google / Apple servers, the cloud, etc.

@KraftTea Blocking "Android" is like ... blocking nearly every small computer from working isn't it the biggest OS in the world?

@futurebird Also, Russia is blocking VPNs in the various Apple & Android stores, in many cases with the assistance of Android & Google.

@KraftTea But social media is less fun and valuable without access to a global audience. This will require a lot of force because in social media an isolated service can't effectively compete with the service with the primate share of users.

@futurebird *shrug*It is happening already. Putin doesn't care much if he bricks everyone's phone, in the effort to build a separate Russian-controlled infrastructure... even if there's nothing adequate to replace what is lost. The most important aspect is that the Russian people will be easier to control. Most of those who would most strongly complain have already left the country.

@futurebirdThanks for reminding us that the internet isn't 'new.' Titans of Internet industry have grown fat on the lie that they are all new entrants, that the internet equals innovation, they shouldn't be stifled by regulation etc. But you are right-- the Internet is OLD.

@futurebird the internet was invented in 60s, but old is a relative term. The telegraph, a technology with much in common with the Internet, was invented in the 19th century. Standardised clocks require global instant communication technology, something we have had for long enough to define large part of our reality.

@futurebird it was only "free and democratic" while the US and it's allies had the clout to push US services into those markets. now that the US is loosing that clout it's balkanising. and it will take people in many parts of the world some time to learn the the internet and facebook are not the same thing. the question is is that time going to be long enough for the regimes to lock it down enough to stop them getting out

@cyberlyra @futurebird when I tell people the internet started in about 1969, I usually encounter disbelief. People don't want to hear that it existed for about a quarter of a century before they heard about it, and want to go on referring to any time prior to about 1995 as "before the internet".internet social activity is also old; social activity was among the early activity of the internet, and email and usenet were created early on in order to support it.

@mcSlibinas The only way Putin will stop is if he's destabilized both from the outside and the inside. There are so many Russians who speak out even though they have everything to loose and many more who agree with them who are too scared to speak. Any population of people could end up in such a condition. Saturated with propaganda, scared to question the violence of the government. Indeed as American I find myself in a different but similar way.
