I guess I just think that those questions children ask, that come from seemingly nowhere— that pure kind of curiosity: is really important, it’s precious. And I wish that it wasn’t so common for adults to stop asking questions like that. I spend a lot of time thinking about the sort of experiences that cause the endless stream of questions to dry up— (it is not because we suddenly have all the answers we need, though that is what some people seem to think it is)

Getting wrong answers, answers that conflict and can’t fit together to form a bigger picture of the world is part of it. Someone on here was lamenting that college freshmen didn’t know how moon phases work. But not knowing that is part of not having a coherent idea of how the whole solar system works. “why is the moon like that?”“it just is.”(stop asking)“It’s due to the shadows angles the earth & rotation it’s very complicated”(it’s not important stop asking)“lizard people”(stop asking)

Don't forget being punished for asking questions in school. For that matter, even thinking independently in school.@futurebird

@futurebird "It's not going to be on the test, and I am scored only on how many of you pass the test." (learning is just a box-ticking exercise)

@futurebird When one asks questions of the curiosity kind, all to often the receiving adults find themselves having to question their beliefs. They don't like that. They get upset and retaliate, or at best, dismiss the questions as childish. Soon a young adult learns to stop asking questions. And to ignore their inner voice.

@futurebird it’s frustrating too, because it’s not that hard to answer the kids’ questions, or at least to find the information. Or even to just say “I don’t know”
