You can pronounce it with a neutral tone, flat from the beginning to the end, or a rising tone, or a falling tone, or a falling-then-rising in tone... and the word has a completely different meaning depending on which tone you use.In written Chinese, these differently-toned words are written differently. In English, they are written the same.

@RevXenoFactIt has just occurred to me that we do get treated like we own our own bodies, when our bodies are in need of medical attention.Pretty shitty that the law treats our flesh like a State asset when it suits them, but pretends otherwise when someone has to pay doctors.

@onanOne of my formative experiences with death involved the suicide of a teenager I'd gone to elementary and junior high school with; we actually were friends, but he was a weirdo and didn't have many, and was bullied and castigated by a lot of others at our schools.His funeral was jam-packed with people our age, wailing and gnashing their teeth and acting like he was their bestest friend EVAR.It made me sick, and opened my eyes to the outlandish ways in which people can be self-serving.
