How did we get here? I read there was something like an 80% increase transgender 'hate crimes' in the last year or so, but surely they meant 'self reported hate incidents', which probably consists of seeing someone being 'misgendered' on social media. I dont think I've seen one incident in the UK press of trans people being attacked, despite all the whining coming from their corner. I think the only kind of violence they experience is literal violence. You think they would be happy to live in such a safe country. @Lemondrizzle

I think the internet bubble makes trans ideology seem a lot more powerful than it is, and the number of MRA's greater than it is, as well as multiple sock accounts, bots, and pile ons. If, like me, you've been obsessed with this debate, for the last couple of years, it seems to be everywhere and my radar is always on for the slightest blip of bullshit.If we went to the mainstream media and picked out the number of stories about transgender compared with any other subject (the environment or even yoghurt) there isn't going to be that many, and few of those are going to be completely uncritical.In the UK, a lot of left leaning people read the Guardian, and if you are involved in this debate, then you probably do too. This is the main outlet for unadulterated trans dogshit, in the UK.The one with real clout is the Daily Mail - which even publishes Julie Bindel - much as I hate to say it, they represent and manipulate mainstream thought in the UK. They know that ordinary people know that you can't change sex. They have a large female readership btw.I'm optimistic.@AthenasWrench

Other reasons that this is an impotant issue important to me (obviously I do my best to care about women and kids) is that trangender ideiology represents the demolition of common sense by powerful forces, as well as a trojan horse to get the left squabbling amongst themselves over the basic buiding blocks of reality.If they can make us swallow this crap, then anything goes.We only have to look at the ludicrous claims that Trump makes on a daily basis, to see that out and out bullshit has a lot more traction than you thought it might and no one cares about facts.@Debbie_TriptychTwins @AthenasWrench

The Goth analogy in Jo's article is an excellent one.At least they were having some fun, and judging by people I knew who went to Slimelight, quite a lot of sex as well.Goth was way better as a youth culture. You've got your Aleister Crowley and maybe a bit of Kafka, you've got some dodgy sulphate. That doesn't sound too bad.Much better than hormones.Apart from a minority of dysphoriacs, TG and especially non binary is just a cultural phenomenon, like being a punk or a hippy.The idea that this makes you a political class and a social justice issue, is just laughable.The idea that you can bend science to accomodate these identities is just ridiculous.@DejaVu

There are a lot of parallels.Goths tended to be a bit too middle class to be punks, mainly because of the association of punk with violence, at the time, which wasn't unfounded btw.There was a sense of alienation, a smidge of gender non conformity, a sense of community, a wish for free expression, expressed in a way that was eccentric and not really that unhealthy.The problem with the current crop ... well do I even have to go there again?This is a stonking quote and exactly how I felt as a small town fledgling hippy - "I didn’t want to be stared at.
