I see a lot of people voicing opinions out there of the form:"I used to be a fan of (Person), but now I found it they say/do (thing I don't believe in) they're a terrible person and I hate everything they do,"Great Shiznax people get a grip.Every single person it there in this great wide world is a complex person. They do things you agree with. They do things you don't believe in. You know a tiny fraction of their lives. To me this seems like intolerance. And I see the same people that voicing the opinion above calling for tolerance of their own views. You can't have both. You must tolerate views different from your own if you ask other people with different views to tolerate your own.Hate cannot drive out hate. Only love can do that.Yes, of course there are people who hold view or views so radically opposed to our own that they are incompatible. Those people are already intolerant. And even though we can say "I cannot agree with them" we should at least recognise they are human and flawed, just as we are.Throwing all of someone's good worries out the window because of one thing you have seen or read in some hyperbolic news feed or scare mongering in group is stupid and wasteful. It manufacturers more hate. Don't do that.

It's irritating me that the conservatives brand taxes as "taking your earnings", because it leaves out the important part: that they then get redistributed in use to maintain and develop a just and fair society. There are lots of examples of unjust and unfair societies in history and currently, and to me the common thread of those is that that take public money (taxes) and they give it to wealthy people and big companies.Whereas in just and fair societies taxes are a 'pooling of resources', a more equitable distribution of that public money to the individuals and small companies that need help and are disadvantaged. No outrage about the government 'taking your hard earned money' and giving it to Qantas, or Harvey Norman, or to Rio Tinto, or people with more than three million dollars in their superannuation? There should be.

I love how so much of the AI debate is on things like:* Will AI take people's jobs?* Will AI destroy creativity?* Will AI take over the world?* Will AI be used to make people poorer? And not:* Will corporations that use AI get rid of people's jobs?* Will corporations that use AI destroy creativity?* Will corporations that use AI try to take over the world?* Will corporations that use AI make people poorer?Because these LLMs and machine learning systems and so forth aren't just wandering around randomly out there - they're owned by corporations. The corporations are the ones putting them to use. The executives that run those corporations are the ones making the decisions to pay people less, to increase their profits, to make creative people act as subeditors for LLMs.It's the corporations, and the ethics-free systems that govern them, that cause these things. They're the ones pushing to have more AI.The rest of us would be happy just having a bit more humanity in the world.

@simon Are you saying that if you said that to a human it would not also get them to put more effort into trying to give you the right answer?

Hey #canberra #ev people - and those that are thinking about it!The ACT AEVA group is running a "Know Your EV" workshop this Saturday:https://events.humanitix.com/know-your-ev-workshop?c=pwIn about two hours we go through all the questions that are commonly asked, and answer yours as well! Whether you're still thinking about whether to buy one, or looking, or have just bought one and want to know how to get the best out of it - this is your chance! After the session we'll go nearby to an AC charger to demonstrate how vehicles can plug in and charge up 'on the road'.It's free for AEVA members, and a small cost to cover the hire of the room for non-members.

@geordie My favourite was being a support person at a company that supported software that was primarily written on RHEL - often hosted by customers but some hosted by the company. The person who set up the hosting, however, was clearly a Debianista, because they had taken the standard RHEL Apache config and made it point to the directories Debian puts Apache config. I suggested, as someone with RHEL training and who had to support both the FrankenDebian config and the RHEL standard config, that we put it back. They objected that their system was clearly more logical. They did not have to support any customers.Yes, that was just one of the many layers of dysfunctional behaviour there.

@geordie I still wish quite a few of the middle and upper management in that company a variety of painful boils in unavoidable, public places until the day they die. There were so many other dysfunctional ways that company worked.I came out of it seriously questioning whether I could work in the industry, and was very fortunate to have friends who valued me and found me a job where they worked. Thanks @mikecarden and Hugh Blemings!

@xkcd What about Corsica? The Isle of Wight? Stewart Island off New Zealand's south island? Guernsey and Jersey? Bornholm, dangling off Sweden but technically part of Denmark? Ă–land and Gotland, also off Sweden? There's literal tonnes of them.

The English version of their collection seems to be at:https://www.printables.com/@Philips/modelsBut it seems really sparse; searching for Philips Fixables seems to get very few results other than announcements, mainly in other languages.

Melbourne morning and the smog is quite evident from the office windows.I wonder how many petrol company executives and fossil fuel enthusiasts look out on that and say, 'look at that, that's the industry I love making that'.Probably zero. They're all too busy trying to justify their own existence to be that self aware. They probably look at it as someone else's problem. Those stupid trucks. Someone must be burning off. It's just the way it is. Meanwhile, I've got a presentation to write about how clean diesel will save the trucking industry. Not sure what 'clean diesel' is but it sounds good so I'm sure we'll be fine.

OK, today is not going great. I'm tired, some moron at work is putting rubbish in the compost bins (which I manage), and I'm trying to get the energy to figure out what to do next. Time to break out the Transcriptions 2020 rework.https://mabula.net/mixes/4.2Also discovered this little gem thanks to a recommendation on Youtube:https://marcomayer1.bandcamp.com/album/twilight-of-the-replicants-sun-2Vangelis meets Tangerine Dream. Very good, quite relaxing. Good for the equilibrium. Doesn't spend as much time as TD would (IMO) in developing and improvising on themes, but still good.
